6th – Creating our Own Government

We have finished our last two units (mapping and elections) and are moving onto unit number three: government.  Government itself is fascinating.  There are millions of moving parts, rules pertaining to how those parts interact, and lots of rules pertaining to the rules pertaining to how those parts interact (sometimes the government feels like an endless loop).

We are going to circumvent that process of endless loops and begin anew.  After studying the election so much, we really gained an interest/appreciation for government so why not create our own.  This process is going to take a few weeks or so, where we will create our own anthem, seal, and flag; while eventually learning more about the branches of government (and running for our own position).

Today is the beginning of our process.  Hopefully this sparks some conversations at home!

  1. This is an authentic way to help students develop deep conceptual understanding of how different forms of governments are structured and operate.

  2. This is super cool! I’m guessing they’ll run into the typical government problems regarding how decisions are made when opinions vary.
