7th – Classroom Economy…identity theft!

Today, we had a serious offense happen within our classroom.  Someone wrote a check to the bank to pay for their taxes.  Unfortunately, they did not complete the check accurately and left a bit of space on the check for a forgery to occur.  Instead of paying a total of $61.00 to the bank, they paid a total of $61,000.00 to the bank…a big difference.

Our priority now is to resolve this situation and restore the good name of that student whose money got stolen.  We will begin by looking out what to do if that happens on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau website.  From there, we will hopefully enact an investigation so as to get to the bottom of this whole mess.

If you have had experience in this situation and/or have advice, share it please so we can rectify the situation!

  1. This is an incredible example of project-based learning and I am especially impressed with the added component of reading Evicted and discussing what WE ALL can do to help break cycles of poverty and humanize its victims (I just realized I am reading your blog posts in reverse order!). Thank you for leading this charge and promoting social awareness and social justice to our entire MJDS community. I hope this is shared with the larger MJDS community soon.

  2. Woof! It’s definitely important to take care when writing a check or doing anything important. Paying an extra $60,939.00 is a bummer. At least you caught the mistake!
