7th – Supply and Demand

Some of our vegetables are growing (and plenty have died).  Soon, we will need to figure out our pricing model for our vegetables.  How will we do this?  It is simple: Supply and Demand.

Today, we really took a deep dive into supply and demand.  We looked at a simple supply and demand graph; labeling each part and focusing on how prices and quantities interact.

Feel free to take a look at our Supply and Demand curves and ask your child all about it (linked here).  They were really interested in this topic so strike while the iron is hot!

6th, 7th, 8th – Free Seed Project

I recently received a wonderful package from the Free Seed Project (linked here).  Every year, Rob Greenfield of the Free Seed Project gives away thousands of seeds to people around the country.  His only ask: share the foods or seeds with members of the community.  I have in my possession the following seeds (and quantities of those seeds).  If you would like some, please let me know and I will do my best to give to you/your child as soon as possible.  Hopefully you can grow a beautiful garden to feed yourself, your family, and your community for the year to come.

Carrot – 25

Basil Mix – 200

Kale – 40

Radish – 50

Chive – 40

Arugula – 170

Turnip – 200

Dill – 100

Mustard Green – 70

Bunching Onion – 120

Herb mix – 400

Flower Mix -120

Additionally, I have lots of milkweed seeds from last year (still fresh and in the package).  It is great food for the monarch butterfly.  If you want some of those seeds, also let me know.

7th – Cleaning Compost Buckets

It is a dirty job, but someone has to do it!  Every week, we clean our compost buckets out.  Sometimes, like this week, they stink (we missed last week because of student led conferences).

If only we did a better job during the week scooping the left-overs off the bottom, we might have less to clean come Tuesday!  Maybe try mentioning that when talking with your student; see how they respond.

7th – Guest Speaker

We had the pleasure in class of having a Zoom guest speaker, Melissa Tashjian of Compost Crusder.  We have been using Compost Crusader the entire year for our compost collection program (Melissa’s company picks up our compost pile on a biweekly basis).

It was an awesome time to hear from the starter of such an influential business in making our world a better place.  We all had our questions answered and got to visit (virtually) with an entrepreneur.  Feel free to ask your child some of the questions they asked and some of the answers they found out during our visit.

7th – Transferring Day

Adding more water to our vertical garden.

measuring the nutrient mix added to our water.

who would have thought that raising food is a science?

beginning the transferring process.

selecting the plants that have sprouted.

watering our soil-based garden; which is sprouting very well.

7th – Planting and maintaining

Even our virtual students are involved (as much as is possible) in the decision making and action of planting our herbs.  It really is a group decision on what gets planted.  Hopefully in the next few weeks, we can get more planted so we can continue to grow more food to be sold within our community.

7th – Worms introduced

We got worms (not the bad kind)!  We ordered worms for one of our grow systems and we introduced them today.  Thanks to the Lion of the Month, we captured their release on video.  Check out the video to our worms being introduced here.

7th – Planting Day

Aside from the fire drill we had at the beginning of class, today was a thrilling class!  Every group planted their seeds in their grow mediums (either soil or the pre-made growing cubes).  It was so exciting to see the hundreds of seeds get planted.  Hopefully within the next 7-10 days, the seeds will germinate and we can transfer to our grow system.

7th – Almost ready to plant

We are almost ready to plant!  Just our last little bit of work to do.  Our soil-based planting system is ready.  Our water-based planting systems are all ready.  All that is left is to get our worms (for the device pictured), germinate our seeds (starting tomorrow), and watch everything grow!

Up next: learning about supply and demand so we can accurately price our produce!
