Across all grade levels we are learning about fiction, but the article of the week assignment also ties in the learn targets associated with nonfiction and background knowledge as well. This way students are always getting a bit of both. Below is a list of the skills your student should show or be working towards proficiency on by the end of quarter one. These are also the basis for their quarter one assessments which determine their grade.

  1. Actively uses comprehension strategies before, during, and after reading nonfiction to monitor and deepen comprehension.
  2. Actively uses comprehension strategies before, during, and after reading fiction to monitor and deepen comprehension.
  3. Uses textual evidence to support thinking and reading in both conversation and writing. (fiction and nonfiction)
  4. Recognizes there are sub genres of fiction texts and that knowing the genre can illuminate meaning connected to the story elements.
  5. Identify common story elements, key details, and structures of fiction.
  6. Regularly read, record, and reflect on a independent reading book of your choice and be able to demonstrate your comprehension of your book through conversation and writing.
