Today we continued to learn routine, procedure and expectations for Reader’s Workshop. The work we did today is crucial to our continued success as we move forward in our units of study. We focused on our notebook expectations and examined the grading rubric that we will use in class.
Throughout the year I will ask your child to self-assess using the rubric to monitor his/her growth in class. I explained that the most important component of the rubric is the section on reading response. In addition to conferring with your children during independent and guided reading, reading responses allow me to see what reading comprehension strategies your child s using on his/her own. Over the course of the year we will learn about different ways to respond to reading–writing, pictures, graphs, diagrams, etc.. Today we focused on a three step procedure that will allow students to ease into writing deep, thoughtful responses.
For homework, I have asked your children to do 10-15 minutes of reading at home and respond to this blog post using our three step system. They can check our Google Classroom portal to see the handout provided in class.

when I was reading Magnus Chase they had just killed a ring dragon and when you kill one you have to “cut out its heart roast it and eat it”. the thing is the ring dragon was the dad of one of Magness friends. so I predict that his friend will take one proud bite of the heart and start crying.
Hunger Games 10-18-17
Katniss is on the train to the Capital. She dines with Pitta and Effie. When they dined it reminded me of when I go to the fancy restaurant at the resort in Mexico when I have to have VERY nice manners.
Don’t you always have nice manners? Why might it be strange that Katniss gets treated so well right before she competes in the hunger games?
The Lightning Thief 10-18-17
Percy Jackson has escaped from from the underworld. But now he is fighting Ares and Ares is very strong and he has a super awesome sword that’s super thick and is so thick that it almost looks like two swords. Ares is now charging at Percy. I predict that Percy is going to start backing into the water and then swing hi sword at Ares.
How do you think Percy feels? Will his feelings help or hurt him in the fight against Ares?
While I was reading Greek Gods Hades godnapped Persephone and hid her because he had a crush on her. Zeus helped. Zeus and Hades were also her uncles. I predict Hades and Persephone will fall in love and make babies because that’s what happens in every Greek myth.
I am reading Dork Diaries Tales from a Not-So Fabulous life.I am going to be stopping and jotting.
What does procurement mean?
Nikki one of the main characters got dragged into a situation of making tattoos for people from a pen and she is uncomfortable with that.Her friends made her do it because Nikki is a really good artist and they needed to collect books for a book drive for the school library to win a trip to the biggest library in the world because they really wanted to go.If I was Nikki I would stand up to Chole and Zoey who are Nikki’s friends and tell them that I feel uncomfortable drawing tattoos on people.The only thing is that I don’t like about Nikki is that she is very shy and sometimes does not stand up for what she believes in and does not say her opinion and I hope she gets better at that as the story goes on.I predict by the end of the book Nikki will stand up for what she believes in and say her feelings or her friends will realize that Nikki does not want to do this.
When you say ‘her friends made her do it’, why do you think that is? What does Nikki need so that she has the ability to make her own choices?
When I was reading The Scorch trials I found out that the safe haven right now is a stick in the ground. There were these white coffins that had a strange creature inside them.
when the coffins opened by them selves these huge human thingies popped out. I wonder if they are going to try and kill Thomas and his freinds.
I was reading Rocket and Groot by Tom Angleberger Rocket and Groot crash landed on a planet with a “strip mall”. Rocket and groot went In the mall and found a dry cleaner who shoved rocket into a restroom with a LIVING TOILET! I predict rocket will safely get out eventually and find another store of some kind.
I read weird but true life stories. I read about the worlds largest pizza. And it was really cool because it was 131 feet long. It took 48 hours to cook. It made 5,000 batches of dough. It had 9.9 tons of flour. It had 5 tons of tomato sauce. It had 8,800 pounds of mozzarella cheese. And 275 pounds of parmesan cheese. I think these 5 chefs in Italy will hold the work record of the largest pizza for a long time.

Shannon finally stood up for herself and left the “group”
she started hanging out with super nice sixth graders. Jen the leader of the “group” saw how much fun Shannon and the sixth graders were having and decided she would ask to join. Next I predict that Jen will ask to join and Shannon will say yes, I think that Shannon will not try to be bossy and just have fun playing with her friends!!
When i was reading March to the the Park Rudy at the beginning thanking about ham self and not about has friends or family. At the end Rudy is not thanking only about ham self but about aver.
While reading The Candy Smash,
I predicted that Jessie’s teacher wouldn’t let her hand out her survey for Valentines Day. Jessie was lucky because there was a sub and the sub went out for a phone call.
In the book it said that the children hated the sub. I wonder what made them feel like that?
