Purim Field Trip next week!

I can hardly believe it is time to bust out our costumes for the MJDS Purim celebration! It will be an entire day full of silliness and yummy Hamentashen!

My favorite part of the MJDS Purim celebration is delivering mishloach manot (Purim baskets of goodies) around the city. This year, fifth grade has an extra special job. We have been chosen to deliver our mishloach manot to our local heros. This includes our firefighters and police officers as well as other service providers in the area. Because we will be making multiple stops, it seems to make the most sense for the fifth graders to drive in cars. We will split up between two cars with Gev. Broidy and Gev. Kimmel driving. Please let us know if this is an issue for you!

Elevating the Quality of our Work

Good Morning!

I want to start by saying WHOA– It feels great to be back in the classroom! I took over teaching responsibilities from Gev. Petrova yesterday and I quickly remembered how much I love what I do! It was fun to feel the energy radiating from your kiddos as they poured over writing samples to practice using our biography rubric and checklist.

Monday’s mini-lesson was a review of the expectations for final drafts of our biographies. To gain a better understanding of the rubric, students partnered up and scored sample writing. I was pleasantly surprised to see how excited they were to do this and proud of their efforts to think critically while scoring the writing. It was an opportunity to again practice giving critical feed-forward that was kind, specific and helpful. The students then took out their own writing and used their new knowledge to evaluate each other’s work.

Gev. Petrova has been hard at work leaving your children feedback on their docs. The expectation is that students will use the feedback, checklist and rubric to elevate the quality of their work before turning in final drafts on Friday. Of course, Gev. Petrova and I will be conferring this week to help students make this possible.

Students will have class time on Tuesday and Wednesday to work on their writing before turning in final drafts on Friday. We highly suggest that students read their work OUT LOUD while working on editing/revising.

Can’t wait to print and share final drafts soon!

ELA Update

Hi Everyone,

I spent the week transitioning back into 5th grade ELA. All I can say is— WOW! I will never be able to thank Gev. Petrova enough for her hard work in my absence. I was blown away by the progress I saw both in reading responses and writing skills. Your kids, and Gev. Petrova, are serious rock stars!

After mini lessons on transition words and writing conclusions, Gev. Petrova and I spent the week conferring 1:1 with your children to catch me up to speed. These conferences included looking at their thinking journals, checking in on their biographies and writing goals for the rest of the quarter. It was impressive to see how self aware your children have become and to hear their desire to work hard on their areas of growth. On Friday, we will reintroduce the checklist and rubric for students to use as they peer edit in class next week. Gev. Petrova will continue to provide feedback as final drafts are due next Friday, April 15.

Next week, Gev. Petrova will phase out of the 5th grade classroom as we wrap up biography writing. We hope to have finished products by the end of the week!

We will then focus our attention on our Junior Docent reports and creative writing pieces to prepare for the program on April 16. This is a program special to fifth grade and one of my favorite nights of the school year! Please invite family and friends to this special event!

Geverets Porat and Kimmel

I’m back!

I was welcomed with a decorated classroom and endless hugs this morning! I loved every single second of my time home with Andrew, but missed your wonderful children and the MJDS community SO much!

I will spend the week transitioning back into the classroom to ensure a smooth and comfortable adjustment for the 5th and 6th graders. Gev. Petrova and I have been communicating frequently about your children; I am excited to see all of their growth and development for myself!

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Glad to be back!

🙂 Gev. Kimmel
