My thoughts

1. How can a set up small groups during math/word study?
2. How can I improve spelling and make it meaningful?
3. How I am ensuring all needs are being met?

9/24

In two weeks I will have small reading groups formed and will have goals laid out for each group. DJ will observe my groups and if I am meeting the goals I have laid out for them.

I will use materials from Seravallo to make my goals and from Jason to lay out my ideas for small group instruction.

Moving Toward Empowerment

One of our MJDS beliefs is to move from student engagement to empowerment. At the end, students will feel a sense of ownership and pride in their work. They will feel self-motivated to keep working and learning and have the skills to succeed.

Cliff was in woodworking with Gev. Honigman. He had learned how to use all of the tools in the Makerspace. When given the choice to work on his own passion project, he didn’t know what to do and felt disengaged.

Gev. Honigman noticed that he faced some difficulties and approached him to see how she could help empower him. She asked pointed questions to try to understand how to help him feel empowered. She learned that he liked to cook and encouraged him to think of something he could make that relates to cooking.

Cliff felt inspired and decided to make a wooden spoon in the Makerspace. He used the band saw and used the skills he had acquired to make something he felt proud of.

Lastly, he gave the wooden spoon to Gev. Gray as a gift. He felt fulfilled and proud.

Learning Objective(s):

Activity Summary and Examples:

Mother’s Day gifts- painting frames

Block play! (Building and writing)

143- “I love you” day-

Reflection:

What went well in your actions/words?

It was a fun week back with lots of activities planned. The students were happy to be with each other again. The activities kept them moving.

What went well in the student’s actions/words/behaviors?

I love seeing them own their learning and really understand what we do. A good example is the block play above. Journal writing is exactly where it should be, with kids feeling confident sounding out words and writing easily.

What would you do differently next time?

Blogging still is cumbersome. The kids don’t know how to do it independently and it’s a lot of work on the teacher’s end to get it done. I’m not sure about next year and how I will use blogging with the students. Something to talk about/think about.
