Repairing Together

We went on a field trip to meet new friends. We went to the Urban Ecology Center. We went with two other schools: Milwaukee College Prep and Bruce Guadalupe. My friend’s name was Mariella. She was from Milwaukee College Prep. She was really nice and welcoming. One thing I learned about her was that she like to draw. I liked making Native American toys. It was really fun.

Selecting

We are selecting which book we want to write about. We can either do a persuasive writing piece or write about a memory. I chose to write about the time that I sprained my ankle. It is important to me because if I didn’t sprain my ankle, I wouldn’t have met a really good friend. I am going to write a lot more about it.

Book Club

In our class, we are doing a book club. My book club group is reading a book called Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan. In this book, their mother died right after Caleb, Anna’s little brother, was born. Their father sent out an add in the newspaper saying that he needed a wife. A plain and tall woman named Sarah sent back a letter to him and said that she was coming for a month. When she came, Caleb, Anna and their father liked Sarah. Sarah taught Caleb how to swim, and Papa built a dune in their barn. I like this book because of the way she used the words. For example, instead of saying, ‘Nick, our cat went by my legs,’ she said, ‘I felt a brush by my legs. It was Nick’. I can’t wait to read the rest of the book.

Gratitude

I am grateful for Gev. Dowling because she helps me learn. I am grateful for my friends because they support me. I am grateful that we got to hatch chicks. I am grateful for my mother because she makes me noodles for dinner every night. I am grateful for my father because he works out with me. I am grateful for trees because they help us breath. I am grateful for my grandparents because they come visit us from far away. I am grateful for my bike so I can have fun. I am grateful for my house so I am safe when I am sleeping. I am grateful for food so I won’t be hungry. I am grateful for a car so I don’t have to walk everywhere. I am grateful for water so I can drink and won’t get thirsty. I am grateful that I am Jewish. I am grateful for a good life.

Hatching Chicks

In our class, we are hatching chicks. There is something called an incubator that acts like a mother hen sitting on her chicks. It is supposed to be at one hundred degrees Fahrenheit in the incubator. We have a hatching calendar. It takes twenty-one days for the chicks to hatch. On day one, the chick’s nervous system develop. On day two, the chick’s heart starts beating and blood vessels start to appear in the in the yolk. There are too many steps to explain. On the twentieth day, the chick will break into the air sac and start breathing. On the twenty first day, the chick is ready to hatch. Here are some parts of a chicken: the comb (fleshy part on top of the chicken’s head) , the beak, the breast, the shank (a part on the chicken’s leg) , the wattle (the part under the chicken’s beak) , the tail feathers, the wings and the toes. Here are some parts of the egg of a hatching chick: membrane (thin but strong layer near the shell that protects the chick during development against infection) , air cell (it forms at the larger end of the egg and is where the chick will turn to as it develops) , the chalazae (this is part of the albumin – the albumin is the egg white and protects the yolk and gives protein to the embryo – the unborn chick at the early stage of development) The germinal disc (is on the egg yolk and helps the embryo in the early development). We put 24 eggs in the incubator.  We don’t think they will all survive.  I can’t wait to see the chicks.

My Chapter Book

I’m writing a chapter book. It’s called The Acrobat Juniors. It’s about two orphan girls who get adopted by Trillionares and meet a bunch of friends and enter a contest and the winner of the contest gets  one thousand dollars. It’s in a chapter book series called The Juniors. I’ve read two chapters to my class so far. I’m writing chapter seven right now. I can’t wait to publish my book.

Frigville

At school, we are doing something called the community project. We earned fake money from good behavior. Every week, we had the chance to earn $100 fake dollars. We get a deduction from bad behavior. We earned money from good hallway behavior, following directions, doing our work, and bringing our work back on Friday. We would get to buy cardboard houses. Then, on the last week of earning, we paid half of what our cardboard house costed. Then we elected a mayor, supervisor of maintenance, and judge. The election for mayor was a tie. The winners were Mayor Shamah and Mayor Broidy (Yoni and Baylen) . The supervisor of maintenance was Maya Khayat. The judge was Max Steel. We named our town Frigville. After we paid our taxes, and painted our houses, we had the store. With the leftover money, we bought curtains and wallpaper and baskets to put in our houses. We had house partners. We decided which partner would live in the house for the first two weeks and which partner would live in the house for the second two weeks. I am living in the house for the second two weeks. My partner is Noah. Since there are so many houses in the classroom, our room is very crowded. I can’t wait for my turn in the house!

Puppies

We have a ranch theme in our classroom. Seven puppies were born at a ranch. They’re only eight weeks old. They’re soooooooooo cute! The owners only brought five of them. Four of them were black and the other one was white. They played and crawled on our laps. At the end of the day, the white one tried to nap, but the cage was so small that the black ones kept crawling on him. It’s too bad I had to go home.

Weaving

Since we are learning about  Argentina, we are doing weaving. People weave a lot in Argentina. There are different parts of the loom. There is the loom, it is what all of the parts put together. There is the weft, the part that you have to weave in. There is also the warp, the part that you have to weave on with the weft. There is  a shed stick, you weave it in and flip it up and you put the needle right through, but you can’t use it for every row or you will have to do the last two over again. Last, but not least there is the needle, the part you use to weave the weft through the warp. I think my weaving will look beautiful when it’s done.

The Handwriting Hospital

Sometimes when we have handwriting that Gev. Dowling can’t read,we have to go to the Handwriting Hospital. In the Handwriting Hospital, there is a pencil and some lined paper. We then have to write a few thing in our best handwriting. I don’t know exactly what happened because no one in our class has been in there. The diseases we’ve studied are Sloppox and Tinywritis. I hope I don’t have to go to the Handwriting Hospital!
