Welcome to 2019-2020 5th Grade Math!!

5th Math – Unit 1 – Addition and Subtraction with Fractions.

Woohoo! I cannot believe the school year is almost here. Our first unit in math this year will be focused on addition and subtraction with fractions. By the end of the unit, you will be able to show and explain so many new math concepts 🙂

You will be able to…

  • Use visual fraction models to discuss basic fraction ideas.
  • Replace given fractions with equivalent fractions and explain why they are equivalent.
  • Understand the role of the multiplier when finding equivalent fractions.
  • Use a variety of strategies to compare fractions using benchmark fractions and  number sense of fractions.
  • Convert between fractions and mixed numbers using visual fraction models.
  • Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
  • Estimate sums and differences of fractions and mixed numbers to determine if the answer is reasonable.

This year, students will be keeping a math journal, so all of their notes, examples, work, etc. will be stored in one place. Students will be responsible for bringing home their math journal each night to use as a resource while completing homework. During our first few weeks of school, we will go over the expectations of this so students have a strong understanding of the purpose of their math journal.

Here’s to a fabulous new school year!!!!
