5th Grade Final Science Project

Hi 5th Grade Families,

For our final unit in science, the kids are building solar ovens that they will test at the end of the year. One of our main objectives of this unit is to build a solar oven with the least amount of environmental impact. This means that students are expected to find recycled materials that they can reuse in a different way. Today in class we began to discuss how so many things we use everyday can be reused in different ways. For example, we talked about how instead of buying a new container of tinfoil, we can actually flip our chip bags inside out and find that reflective material we need.
Each student will be given a shoe box, glue, and tape, however the rest of the materials need to be recycled or reused material.
Some examples are:
– Recycled paper/newspaper
– Tinfoil that has been used to cover something else
– Plastic bags that have already been used
– Old clothes or fabric that is no longer used
If you are unable to do this at home, there are so many recycled materials we can find and use here at MJDS.
Students are expected to come with their materials to class this coming Tuesday, May 21st.
Please feel free to email if you have any questions.
Thanks so much,
Cylie
