Newspaper Shoe Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only newspaper, 24 inches of tape, and one scissors, you and your partner need to create one shoe that fits either you or your partner’s foot. The shoe must be able to come on and off without falling apart.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Communication):

My goal for communication today within my team is to not get mad because I know if i get mad I get controlling and I get annoying.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out plan> My plan is to make the shoe on my partners foot to know what size to make it and I also want to try to make a heel because it sounds like a challenge to make a heel with newspaper. We are going to try to make it by starting with a newspaper base and build walls and roll up a piece to make the heel and tape it to the flat shaped shoe.

Why I think my plan will be successful because its going to be a challenge but its going to fun and my group and I are going to have to work together to make it work.

Our Group’s Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out plan> Our plan is to make an ancel boot heel because S’s idea was to make a boot and O’s idea was to make a heel. We are going to make this by starting with a newspaper base and build walls and roll up a piece to make the heel and tape it to the flat shaped shoe.

We chose this plan because its my partners idea and my idea.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

Each partner will be responsible for having my foot being used to make the shoe and my partner helping me make the shoe.

After the Build

Our design worked well because we worked together to make the shoe.

My Prior Knowledge of What an Invasive Species Is

What do you think invasive species means?  I think it means a ecosystem maybe has changed because of the food chain and is going to keep changing because of different animals.

What does it mean to invade something? I means get into there stuff/invade there stuff.

Can animals invade? Yes because animals invade to get food and to find there habitat.

What about plants? Yes because plants invade to grow and when they get bigger they go into the other plants space.

How might invasive species affect other organisms in their environment? It maybe will affect the food chain because if animals keep coming in and out of the food chain animals will start to die because other animals keep dying.

Reflecting on ETC

How have you changed as a group member this year in ETC? I have changed by moving from me to we because I’m  doing better at communicating with my group. I’m being more kind with my group members.

How has working in ETC made you a better student in other classes? (Social Studies, ELA, Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Math, Science) I’m doing a better job communicating with my group members by letting them talk and learning there ideas and working with them.

Thinking about my blog posts, I have improved by…. I have improved by I put more detail in my blog posts.

In the future, I plan to improve my blog posts by…. My plan is to get better at writing the blog post and making sure it’s my best work.

Native American Experience

Some Native Americans do not like the term Native American. Explain why they reject this name. I think they rejected that name because maybe they don’t like to be different and they don’t want to be treated differently.

One person in the BBC Video said that living in poverty does not mean they are poor. What do you think he meant by that? I think he meant that poverty can mean different things and every way is different.

Some Native Americans approve of the team name Redskins. What is their reason for approving this name while others do not? To some people it might be cool how there named after a Native American tribe but others might think its rude and mean because there kinda making fun of them.

In the CNN segment, there was a story told about a woman who used to approve of the name Redskins, and now does not. What changed? Why does she no longer approve of the name? I think she doesn’t approve maybe because she thought that it is rude and mean. She thought it was being used against her.

How can non-Native people help others learn about Native Americans current issues? What can we do to help?    We can tell people that its not ok to be rude about there name.

Cup Holder Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials ( 6 straws, 1 piece of paper, a piece of tinfoil, 12 inches of masking tape, 2 paperclips, 2 pieces of string, 1 envelope, and 2 pipe cleaners)  create a structure that holds two cups as high as possible and as far apart as possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for participation today while working in my group is… My goal is to not get so controlling because I know when I get mad I get in control.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out plan>  My plan is to make a bridge will the tinfoil and hold it up with paper tubes and tape or paper clip it together.

Why I think my plan will be successful: I think my plan with be successful because I have made paper tubes before and it held a egg drop.

My Groups Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out plan> My groups plan is  to take the paper cut it in half and make paper tubes then take the envelope on it as a table then take the tinfoil to make a bowl for the cup.

We chose this plan because it is all of our plans together.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction Maybe not agreeing mu come up.

Each group member will be responsible for… M and O were responsible for building the scupcher.

After the Build

<insert photo of completed chain>

Our design worked well because it was the tallest in the class and we worked together to make the design  stand up.

This activity was challenging because M and O worked but L wasn’t working with us even though we tried to include him.

This activity was comfortable because we worked together to build it and it worked.

I met my participation goal by not getting mad and not getting in control.

A strength of my team was making sure we combined our ideas instead of one persons idea.

An area of growth for my team is making sure every body is in the project.

For our next challenge, my new participation goal for myself is not getting mad and in control.

Native American Mascots

Explain why or why not Mascots meant to resemble Native American people should be changed. Yes because it’s rude to Native Americans and its kinda copy write because they made there mascots with out asking.

Should Native American people be given something in return for these mascots? Why? Yes because its  rude and kinda copy write.

Do you think it would be important to you to change these mascots if a mascot was made of you? Explain. Yes because it rude and they did it with out asking me.

Should these teams and the government give Native Americans reparations? Why? I think they should because it is unfair to anyone to do something without permission and no one should treat anyone this way.

Paper Chain Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials (two pieces of construction paper, 1 pair of scissors, 1 ruler and one 12-inch strip of masking tape) create the longest paper chain possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for teamwork today is… y goal is to work with my group, talk to them so we can work together and try not to get so controlling because I know sometimes it to controlling.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out plan> My plan it to take the paper and roll  it up and take a little piece of tape and make a chain and take a longer piece of paper and tape it and make it longer.

Why I think my plan will be successful: I think it will be good because its going to be longer.

My Groups Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out plan> Our groups plan is to take the paper roll  and take a little piece of tape and make a chain and take a longer piece of paper and tape to make it longer.

We chose this plan because it will make it longer and its an idea that we decided on and worked together on.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction… Possible challenges might be deciding who has what job.

Each group member will be responsible for… B is responsible for building the chain S is responsible for cutting the paper and O is responsible for cutting the tape in small pieces.

After the Build

<insert photo of completed chain>

Our design worked well because… We made a 195-inch chain and we worked together to make it.

This activity was challenging because… We had a limit to tape and it was hard to make the chain.

This activity was comfortable because… We work together  to make the chain.

I met my teamwork goal by… Not being in control and we worked together.

A strength of my team was…. Working together.

An area of growth for my team is… Nothing

For our next challenge, my new teamwork goal for myself is…. not get in control and work together.

Columbus debate reflection

Explain how your group worked together before the debate (during research). Did you work well together? We worked together by each person worked on research and we all worked on the scripted.

Explain how your group worked together during the debate. Did you work well together? We all talked in different parts.

What can you do differently next time? Why will this help you and your group improve? I would maybe talk to my group first so we can work together to help each other to work

Explain how this debate influenced your opinion on Columbus. I think it made me dis like him more because when I was research I found a bunch.

PinBall Marble Run Challenge

Essential Question: Can my group successfully plan, design and build a paper plate pinball/marble run using only the provided materials?

Goal: Move the marble from one end of the plate to the other, having the marble travel through at least three obstacles.

My teamwork/communication goal for this challenge:  Our goal is to make the ball  to go through the obstacles.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Look at the supplies table. You may NOT take anything from the table yet.

You may only take ONE plate and ONE marble. There are no other requirements. You will have 15 minutes to build.

What ideas do you have? We should take pipe cleaners and make a path and take toilet paper rolls and make paths.

Your group has shared all of your ideas. Before you can start building, what is your actual plan?

  • What will your marble run look like? (draw a sketch & insert photo here)
  • How will you make sure all members of the group are included in the building process? We will make different parts in the building.

Build and test

  • Insert a few photos of the building process here

Reflect

What was comfortable about the challenge/teamwork?  We all worked on different parts on the project.

What was difficult about the challenge/teamwork? I think it was difficult to work together because we would just all talk at the same time and didn’t work together that much.

How did the teamwork rubric help your group today? I didn’t help a lot because we weren’t working together that much.

Is there anything you would change about the teamwork rubric after going through this challenge? I wouldn’t really change anything.

How did you support your team today? I helped make the plate.

What might you do differently during our next team challenge? I might try not to be so controlling.
