Shira, the hard one doesn’t have just one answer.
[Angry] + [Scared] = [Sneeze]
[Sneeze]/2 = [Happy]
[Scared] + [Happy] = 30
[Angry] = ???
You’ve got four variables but only three equations. If you work everything out, you get this:
[Angry] = 3*[Happy]-30
[Sneeze] = 2*[Happy]
[Scared] = 30 – [Happy]
If you want all the numbers to be integers greater than or equal to zero, then [Happy] can be any number between 10 and 30. That’s 21 different solutions.
If [Happy] = 10 then:
[Angry] = 0
[Sneeze] = 20
[Scared] = 20
If [Happy] = 20 then:
[Angry] = 30
[Sneeze] = 40
[Scared] = 10
If [Happy] = 30 then:
[Angry] = 60
[Sneeze] = 60
[Scared] = 0
The easy one still has multiple answers:
[Laugh] * [Plain] = [Wink]
[Wink] * [Plain] = 20
This reduces to these two equations:
[Laugh] = 20 / ( [Plain] x [Plain] )
[Wink] = 20 / [Plain]
If you want only positive integers, there are two choices.
[Plain] = 1
[Laugh] = 20
[Wink] = 20
[Plain] = 2
[Laugh] = 5
[Wink] = 10
Either would work.
