ETC Challenges

This week in ETC we worked on mini challenges (similar to science). My favorite challenge was the one where we had to make a ring out of pringles.

In this challenge we had to make a ring out of pringles and have it stand up on its own.    The difficulties in this challenge were that we had to make it a real circle. Not an oval not a hexagon. A real, no bumps, circle. Another thing was that the pringles cracked and broke. That made them pretty hard to work with. The easy thing in this challenge were making a base. The base was made out of crushed pringles and made a steady base. Better than the slippery table.

This was a very fun challenge that others could try and learn from.

High Holiday Project Brainstorm

Our topic is the holy temple and what it’s services for Yom Kippur were like back then.

We don’t really know much about our topic but we will do a lot of research.

A couple questions that I have are:

  1. How did the holy temple’s services on Yom Kippur connect to the services in our temples on Yom Kippur now (our driving question)?
  2. Did the people respond differently to the Yom Kippur services then, than now?

We will look for answers to our questions in books and reliable online sources.

The help that we need from teachers to move forward in our project is good online sources to help get information.

My Summer Reading Book

Lucy wanted to be home schooled but her grandmother made her go to middle school before applying for college (she is a genius-ish) so Lucy goes to middle school, makes friends and enemy’s, becomes to love a dog and goes to a horrible birthday party then she learns what middle school and friends are really about.

I am choosing the talk show project. I am choosing this project because I think that it will tell most about the book without giving everything away. I am going to write my question and Lucy’s answer connecting to the book as best as I can.

My Area and Perimeter Project

In math we are working on area and perimeter. For a project we made the plan for a Water Park, National Park, Zoo, or Adventure Park.          I chose an Adventure Park. I chose this park because it seemed like a fun thing to plan.                                                                                                    I am proud that I worked hard and planed out the area and perimeter and where to put each activity on the paper.                                                  If I were to do something differently I would have added a couple more areas if I had a little more time.                                                                      I learned how people actually plan theme parks using math.

Reflecting On My Editorial

1. The most important thing I learned about writing editorials is:

The most important thing I learned about writing editorials is that you need to have important evidence and a counter argument.

2. One important thing I learned about researching a topic is:

One important thing I learned about researching a topic is that you need to find sources that give good and correct information.

3. What advice would you give to writers who are trying to argue a point or persuade their readers to think as they do? List at least two tips:

A tip I would tell them to persuade their readers by getting the best information from  the best sources.                                                                        A tip I would tell them to argue a point by using the best counterarguments and find good information to tell them that they are wrong.

How I Think Student Led Conferences Went

I feel that my student led conference went really well.                                                                                                                                                               I think that if I were to do something differently it would be having more time to tell my parents about my learning.                                                I feel that I got to say as much as I had wanted to and that my parents are happy with what I presented.                                                                       I like being in charge of a conference because I get to tell my parents about my learning from my point of view.                                                        How come not all schools  have student led conferences at all?    I hope that we have student conferences next year.

How I Did on my Study Plan

I think I kind of followed my study plan. I think I kind of slowed down but not as much as I would want to.                                                               I hope that next time I can work harder to follow my study plan.  To help me slow down, I can work on drawing a picture to help me visualize the problem. I wish I had just slowed down a little bit more.

Our Social Studies Field Trip

I learned that Milwaukee was very different about two hundred years. I also learned that Gertie the duck was a duck that was found under the Wisconsin Ave. bridge. Gertie and her ducklings were very special to Milwaukee at that hard time.

It surprised me that it was not that long ago that the things we saw were actually happening. I bet it seems that we didn’t learn anything but we learned so much. For example I learned that a drug store then used leeches!

I think that our field trip was an important thing for all of us. It is definitely a field trip all schools should take.

Interview at Sarah Chudnow!!!!!!

What were 2-3 interesting things you learned from your buddy at Ovation Sarah Chudnow?

I think that it is cool that she (the woman I talked to) was a social worker when she was younger. She also went to business college. I bet it was hard because women were not allowed to do as many things as they are allowed to do now.

What did you enjoy about your conversation?

I enjoyed that she liked talking to me and that she wanted to talk about her life

What was hard about your conversation?

I think that nothing about our conversation was hard because she could hear me and I could understand her perfectly fine.

What would you do differently if we went back again?

I would have her ask me more questions about me.

If you had a chance to ask additional questions, what are two more questions you would ask your person, based on what you learned about them?

I did ask many additional questions and one was what is your favorite food. She answered chocolate (yum!).

What did you learn about Jewish Milwaukee or general Milwaukee history from your conversation?

I learned that there were not as may malls or people. Cars had just barely started to be a thing. she leaned to drive when she was 60! I learned that things are quite different now.
