Final Scientific Explanation on Sea Lamprey and Trout

The Sea Lamprey is causing a decline in the Trout population.

From one of the texts; “Fisherman’s Journal” that we read we learned that the Sea Lamprey invaded the Trout’s territory forcing them into a different area that they aren’t used to. In new territory, there is less food and/or potential predators and then Sea Lamprey will not be the only species invading a food web. Even if there is Trout still living in their natural area the Sea Lamprey not only eat Trout but they also eat a lot of smaller fish which trout also eat. Causing them to get eaten and starve thus causing them to die.

In class, we read that the Sea Lamprey have 60-100 thousand eggs that all contain more Sea Lamprey and then there will be lots of baby Sea Lamprey to go around. Since the Sea Lamprey has no natural predators in the Great Lakes they can mate freely making them eat a lot more food. Making them plenty and then eating a lot more trout than when they came because there’s more Sea Lamprey

In the video Silent Predators, we saw how much damage the Sea Lamprey can do to a trout. Their sharp teeth cut into the inside of the skin and eat all of their internal organs. This could cause, fatal blood leaking and just straight up death. This kills all trout being eaten by the Sea Lamprey making the trout population die out.
