Reading – Unit 1 Standards

The goal of our first reading workshop unit is to expose the students to different genres of literature.  They will learn about themselves as reader by choosing books that interest them and that are at a level that is appropriate for them.  We will be developing our reading community and our expectations for our workshop time during this unit. The following are the kid friendly standards that we will be focusing on:

  • I can show that I can have good conversations with friends and teachers, while listening and taking turns.
  • I can tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
  • I can understand and use the helpful parts of nonfiction books to help me find important facts and details.
  • I can ask and answer questions about things I hear and see.
  • I can retell a story using important details and show that I know what the author is trying to teach me.
  • I can tell the characters, setting and what happens in stories.
  • I can compare what happens to characters in stories.
  • I can find words in a story that tell about feelings.
  • I can show that I know how words and their parts go together.
