Testing our Rapunzel Creations

What materials did you choose for your build and why?

My group chose paper. At first, we tried 3D printing but the machine broke so we chose paper.

While you test:

What are you noticing?

I am noticing that our structure needs help standing up. It really isn’t working so we need to improve it.

What things are working?

The structure is ok but it needs to be improved a lot. It also needs a sturdy base

What things are not working?

The tower isn’t standing on its own and the “rope” isn’t working.

How will you tweak this? Make this better? (Be specific and detailed!)

I think my group will try to find better materials for a structure and try to improve the “rope”.

Do you need any new materials? If so, WHY?

My group does need new materials because the paper isn’t working.

Sketch your new design with labels on a piece of paper. Make sure your drawing is detailed and specifically labeled.

Insert your sketch here:

Why will this new design work better than your first attempt? What is your evidence?

I think it will because it has a better structure and base for support so it should work.

Rapunzel Reflection

How did spending more time on planning improve your final blueprint?

We used the notes Gev. Norlander made to improve our plan.

How did your group come to one final plan after brainstorming several ideas?

We picked the plan that made the most sense and was possible

Why do you think taking more time to plan was important?

It was important because if we didn’t have it we wouldn’t of improved

Did brainstorming with multiple people help you come up with more ideas? How?\

It helped by hearing what my other group members were thinking in terms of strategy and that how it will be done

What would you do differently during the planning process next time?

I would spen more time focusing on the project instead of hard and off topic ideas.

Cereal Box Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Create a new kind of cereal and its box. Using a piece of poster board, you and your team need to create your own box, with the goal of having the largest possible volume.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Participation):

My goal for participation today within my team is…

To help my team come up with a design and help make it.

My Individual Plan

My plan is to have a big letter and a mascot and to make it a box we can find ways to fold it and then try to make it into a box.

Why I think my plan will be successful:

I think my plan will be successful because different people in my group might know different strategies, so we could all try to put something we know into the box.

Our Group’s Plan

We chose this plan because…

we chose this plan because it has a good base and we know how to fold the box.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

the box might fall apart and it may not fold.

Each team member will be responsible for…

JB: help with catch lines and drawing GL: cutter MM: folder and designer.

After the Build

Our design worked well because…

the box held up and the design is cool and it can hold a lot of cereal.

This activity was challenging because…

the tape kept falling off.

This activity was comfortable because….

when we saw the finished product we felt relieved and calmed down.

I met my teamwork participation goal by…

helping with coloring and going over letters in sharpie

A strength of my team was….

we each did our job and we worked together

An area of growth for my team is…

to stay focused and keep track of time

For our next challenge, my new teamwork participation goal for myself is…

to do a different job.

Index Card Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only an index card and scissors find a way to cut your index card so you can fit your entire body through it.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Organization/Planning):

My goal for organization/planning today within my team is…

to not make a mess everywhere and to not have paper everywhere.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out a plan>

Why I think my plan will be successful:

I think it will be successful because if I cut up the index card thin enough then I can make a big enough to fit someone through it.

Our Group’s Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out the plan>

we are going to cut small strips of card and cut little cut at the end and then connect them and fold it over and repeat that.

We chose this plan because…

It sounded like it would work and it is very creative.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

it might completely fall apart and it might not be big enough.

Each team member will be responsible for…

MT: cutter, builder JB: builder NK: tester, builder.

After the Build

<insert photo of the finished product>

Our design worked well because…

it was creative and we all worked together.

This activity was challenging because…

it kept falling apart.

This activity was comfortable because….

everyone was helping.

I met my teamwork organization/planning goal by…

cleaning up my area and not making a mess.

A strength of my team was….

we communicated if the product was failing.

An area of growth for my team is…

toward the end, we communicated more and helped each other.

For our next challenge, my new teamwork organization/planning goal for myself is…

to not get frustrated and not get mad if the product is not going well.

Newspaper Shoe Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only newspaper, 24 inches of tape, and one scissors, you and your partner need to create one shoe that fits either you or your partner’s foot. The shoe must be able to come on and off without falling apart.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Communication):

My goal for communication today within my team is…

to communicate if the shoe feels good or not good if I am wearing it.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out a plan>

My plan is to make the shoe layered and thick so it doesn’t fall apart or break and find a shoe that is easy and sturdy.

Why I think my plan will be successful:

I think it will be successful because it is sturdy and not weak.

Our Group’s Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out the plan>

the plan is to make slides shoes that are strong and thick.

We chose this plan because…

because it is easy to make and it should work because it is thick and sturdy.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

it could break or we could argue.

Each partner will be responsible for…

JB: model and builder DY: builder and designer.

After the Build

<insert photo of completed shoe>

Our design worked well because…

it was supported and it slid on and off.

This activity was challenging because…

we didn’t know if it would break or even fit so we went with our gut.

This activity was comfortable because….

I was with my friend and I have done something like this before.

I met my teamwork communication goal by…

I communicated when it worked and didn’t and told my partner if it needed more tape.

A strength of my partnership was….

we communicated to each other telling each other what we needed.

An area of growth for my partnership is…

we could have used our time better and not make as many details.

For our next challenge, my new teamwork communication goal for myself is…

to be able to to the other side of the challenge and not be the model.

Reflecting on ETC

How have you changed as a group member this year in ETC?

I have changed by not interrupting my group mates, I have listened better when my teammates are talking, I have calmed my nerve when things don’t work out how I want them to and I have helped and have been more involved in the challenges.

How has working in ETC made you a better student in other classes? (Social Studies, ELA, Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Math, Science)

It has made me a better groupmate and I can listen without getting distracted so easily when I think the topic is boring.

Thinking about my blog posts, I have improved by….

I have improved by making my writing clearer and easier to read, I have also made my posts better in the writing and in making it make more sense.

In the future, I plan to improve my blog posts by….

making my posts easier to read and more descriptive.

Puzzle Piece Post

<insert photo of puzzle piece>

In August, I thought the following about myself as a learner:

I thought I needed space, quiet and a comfortable place to do whatever I needed to work on

Today, I would add the following to my puzzle piece….because…

I would add I need a little noise, some space but someone can be next to me and I can work in a chair, table, desk or couch because I’ve learned to adjust.

Today, I would tweak or modify my puzzle piece by….because…

I would tweak the noise, the place and who I am by because I have grown out of the specific situations

I think I’ve already grown this year as a learner by…

being able to work with other people than my close friends and letting everyone have a turn

Thinking about working in teams in ETC, my classmates can best support my learning needs by….

helping out in the group and not putting so much pressure on me

Marble Run Challenge.

Essential Question: Can my group successfully plan, design and build a paper plate pinball/marble run using only the provided materials?

Goal: Move the marble from one end of the plate to the other, having the marble travel through at least three obstacles.

My teamwork/communication goal for this challenge:

My teamwork goal is to be patient and not interrupt.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Look at the supplies table. You may NOT take anything from the table yet.

You may only take ONE plate and ONE marble. There are no other requirements. You will have 15 minutes to build.

What ideas do you have?

Some ides that I have is a tunnel, a maze zig zag and a bridge.

Your group has shared all of your ideas. Before you can start building, what is your actual plan?

  • What will your marble run look like? (draw a sketch & insert photo here)
  • How will you make sure all members of the group are included in the building process?
  • We will each take turns building and testing.

Build and test

  • Insert a few photos of the building process here
  • Insert a photo of your final product here

What was comfortable about the challenge/teamwork?

We finished are Pinball structure in good time

What was difficult about the challenge/teamwork?

It kept falling down and we were getting annoyed

How did the teamwork rubric help your group today?

We thought about the other people in our group not just us

Is there anything you would change about the teamwork rubric after going through this challenge?

No, but I would like more time

How did you support your team today?

I let them have space and took pictures

What might you do differently during our next team challenge?

Nothing really I thought we did really well

Teamwork in ETC

Today’s essential question: What makes a team work?

Why is it important to develop the capacity to work as a member of a team?

We are working on making it easier to work in a group.

What areas of teamwork do you find easiest and why?

Communication, Participation, and Organization because they are big things you need to work in a group

What areas of teamwork do you find most challenging and why?

trying to listen to other people without interrupting.

What difference does it make if you are able to play a role in the development of assessment tools?

It would make a difference because I really like to help with a project

In what way(s) do you connect this work to our Core Values: Wonder, Empathy & Tikkun Olam

I connect with them in some ways I care for my friends and I ask questions when I need to and when I see trash I usually pick it up.
