Fish Dissection

During the past two weeks in science, we dissected a Perch and a Sea Lamprey.

The Perch was smaller than the Sea Lamprey and looked more like a normal fish that you would see in a lake. The Sea Lamprey looked like an eel and was long unlike the Perch. I noticed that when I opened up the Perch it didn’t smell as bad as the Sea Lamprey and it was more “organized” it also had a heart. On the other hand, the Sea Lamprey smelled awful and I was disgusted also the Sea Lamprey was all over the place it was a mess and it didn’t have a heart.Displaying Sep 27, 2019 at 8:00 AM.HEICDisplaying Sep 27, 2019 at 7:56 AM.JPG

  1. Great observations! What do you mean when you say the perch was more “organized”? Why do you think the sea lamprey did not have a heart?

You should be so proud of yourself for doing such a great job throughout our first dissection experience!

  2. Thanks for sharing your observations! You looked closely at both fish to notice similarities and differences.

What did the perch’s heart look like? How do you think the lamprey survived without one?

    • The perch’s heart looks like a triangle and it was grey and sort of meaty. I think the sea Lamprey lives without a heart because it gets its blood by sucking on other fish’s blood.
