Parsha of the Week – Chayei Sarah

This is another very full parsha. Sarah dies first and caps off her life, thus the name Chayei Sarah (the life of Sarah). Abraham then buries her in the cave of Machpelah which he purchased from a Hittite. Then Abraham sends Eliezer to find a wife for Isaac. Eliezer brings a bunch of camels and gifts to win the bride over. Then Eliezer asks G-d for some help. G-d gives him a hint, saying the first to offer water for his camels shall be the one to marry Isaac. Then Rebecca comes and does just that. Eliezer brings her back to Isaac and they get married. Then Abraham dies.

But before he dies he takes on a new wife and has six sons with her. SIX! Imagine if Sarah came back to life and saw her husband  having all these children with this new wife. Do you think her feelings would have changed since the last time Abraham had a child with a different wife (think Hagar)? Also, this is the last thing the Torah tells us that Abraham did before he died. I think this is asking Abraham, “How much did you love your wife?” Abraham responds with having 6 babies without her. Did Abraham really care that much for Sarah? Or was it all a show so he could have a beautiful wife. The Torah says Sarah was really beautiful. So beautiful that a king wanted her for his own. Is that the whole reason Abraham kept her around all those years? Now, this doesn’t mean that Abraham didn’t like Sarah. But if Abraham truly loved Sarah, why did he go have children with women other than Sarah? I think that the answer to that is Abraham was feeling a little lonely. He forgot how nice it was to be with Sarah. When Abraham was with Sarah he thought she was not replaceable. Over the years those memories of his love for Sarah slipped away. He found this new wife and she gave him the company he so desperately needed.
