Science Roller Coaster Blog Post

  • Potential energy (stored energy)
  • Kinetic energy (energy of motion)
  • Conservation of energy (basic law of physics)
  • Gravity (when you jump, you come back down, and that’s gravity)
  • Velocity (how fast something goes in a certain direction)
  • Friction (when something rubs on another thing)
  • Slope (rise/run) (something that tells how steep and what direction a line is going in)
Materials I used:
I used tape and the two six foot pieces of foam tube

Visuals of my project:

I don’t have the pictures right now, I will put them up when I can.

Summary of my project:

My roller coaster didn’t work, so we don’t have anything to measure. The reason I think it didn’t work is because where the two tubes were taped together, they kind of got apart, so the marble would get stuck in the middle of them/

What starting height was needed for the marble to make it through the loop most of the time?
 I didn’t measure it yet.
What can you determine about the relationship between potential energy and kinetic energy?
The kinetic energy starts at the top of the loop when the marble starts moving and the potential energy starts at the top of the loop.

Rube Goldberg Reflection 3/19/18

How many transfers do you have?

I’m pretty sure we have four transfers.

Have you tested what you do have?

We tested a lot today, but nothing really seemed to work, but on other days we also tested.

What materials do you still need?

I don’t think we need anymore, but I will check with my group tomorrow.

Have you double checked your rubric to make sure you have met all the requirements?

I don’t think we have double checked but we will on Monday.

Are you concerned about not being completed on time? Why or why not? Have you communicated this to your teachers?

I think we probably will finish because we have the minimum number of transfers, and no I have really talked to teachers about no finishing.

Monday Tefilah Reflection

Which tefilah elective have you been in?
I have been in Glee.
Describe what you have been doing in your elective.
In Glee, we practice songs for the Shabbat, at the Pre-Passover dinner ,that we will be leading.
What has been the best or most meaningful part of this elective?
The best part is the songs because I like to sing and the songs we are singing are in Hebrew and the tunes and songs are pretty.
What is one thing you have learned in your tefilah elective?
I learned a lot of new songs.
What is one thing you would change or improve about your elective?
I would probably change how long it is  because 45 minutes is kind of a long time to not talk to others (although we sometimes talk during class)and to sit in a chair singing (not that I don’t like singing) or maybe we could have a time where we did something else for a couple minutes.
What (related to your tefilah elective) do you still wonder about?
I wonder how long some Shabbats are.
If there is anything else you want to share about your elective, please add it.
For Glee, could we maybe do more “performances”.

Impact of a Pharaoh

Which Pharaoh did you study?

Cleopatra

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your pharaoh? Why did you find this to be so interesting?

The most interesting thing was probably that Cleopatra wasn’t Egyptian because she was a Pharaoh and usually Pharaohs are Egyptian.

What was the most challenging aspect of research while studying your pharaoh? Why?

The most challenging part to research was trying to find where Cleopatra ruled, because on the internet we either missed it or it wasn’t clear.

What was the most challenging aspect of working with a partner throughout this project? Why?

It wasn’t very challenging to work with a partner, but sometimes partners in general get distracted or go off task.

What do you still wonder about your pharoah or about pharaohs in general?

These are my wonders:

1.Was there a certain age that they had to be to become a Pharaoh?

2.If not, who was the youngest Pharaoh?

3.Why was that Pharaoh so young?

Memoir Update

We’ve been working on writing memoirs in ELA for the past few weeks. Here is an update of what I’ve accomplished/learned at each stage of the writing process.

The part of the writing process that has been the most comfortable for me has probably always been Generating Ideas because I like thinking of fun memories and writing down a lot of ideas.

The part of the writing process that has been the most challenging for me has always been Drafting because sometimes I don’t know how to start the story or when to end the story or if my story is a seed story or not.

Immersion

I’ve learned the characteristics of a memoir include:

Dialogue, Reflection, Something to make the reader feel emotion, and Descriptive language.

I think the characteristic I really want to focus on in my writing is more descriptive language because it could make my story better and maybe more people could relate to it.

My favorite memoir mentor text was The Chalk Doll because the author made all the little stories connect, and you could predict what story would be next.

Generating Ideas/Selecting

This is a picture of my writer’s notebook:

Why do you want to share this idea/story with others?

I wanted to share this because this story makes me happy and I thought that it would be fun to write about this.

What emotions do you want your reader to feel as they read your memoir?
I want people to feel happy because I felt happy when this happened.

Drafting

Here is my first draft:

One thing I think I did really well is starting the story with dialogue because it makes the start of the story sound like you are kind of there.

As I head into editing and revising, one thing I want to focus on is putting in more descriptive language because then people can feel like they are there when they’re reading the story.

Stay tuned for another post soon as I work on revising my first draft. If you have any SHE (specific, helpful, empathetic) feedback, please leave it as a comment!

Elements of Plot

What book are you currently reading?

The 39 Clues- Doublecross: Mission Titanic

Why did you choose this book?

I chose this book because it is the next book in The 39 Clues series, and I love The 39 Clues books.

Thinking about your book, Who are the main characters?

Amy, Dan, Ian, Cara, The Outcast, Fiske, Nellie, Sammy ( There are more main characters, but these are the most main)

What was the inciting incident, or the moment that takes place that creates the story?

The inciting incident is when the Outcast ruins Ian’s speech and takes over the Cahill family and says that he is going to recreate four disasters.

What smaller problems happened in the book?

The smaller problems are probably that  the Cahills can’t open boat cargo, and they need to because they think that there are explosives in some of the cargo and that the Cahills have to find a evil man named Atlas to help them.

Have you reached the climax of your book? What was the big moment of tension?

I haven’t reached the climax yet, so I can’t answer this.

Have you reached the resolution? If yes, is it what you thought would happen? If not, how do you think the problem will be resolved?

No, but I think how it will be resolved it that the Cahills will stop the Outcast because they always stop the bad guys.

What type of conflict is occurred in your book?

I think that the conflict is Society vs Character. ( The Cahills being the society, and the Outcast being the character)

Here are pictures of my conflict sheet:

Rube Goldberg Passover Challenge

Today’s goal: By the end of class today my group will have designed the last step of our Rube Goldberg.

What went well today?

We found a idea for how to end the Rube Goldberg, but I left early, so I didn’t get to see it.

What was challenging?

What was challenging was figuring out how to knock something heavy down with something less heavy.

What steps went into deciding  your final design?

We kind of made random things or had a idea and then tried them out.

How many attempts did you try before finding success? If you did not find success, what do you think you need to try on Monday?

We were kind of testing out different ideas and most of the ones that we tested didn’t really work, but I don’t know how many attempts it took to find something that worked.

What are the next steps for your group?

The next steps are to finalize the last step and then start building the rest of the steps.

Are there any additional materials your group needs to gather?

I’m going to bring my LOL Surprise dolls, and probably random things that we might need.
