Seventh graders, you have utilized the scientific process to design and carry out your solubility experiment. Think about the process of collaborating with your partner to ask a scientific question, identify variables, write an hypothesis, develop a procedure, analyze data, and draw a conclusion. Then, reflect upon your learning using the following questions:
1. One way I collaborated and connected with others was…
2. I was successful in …
3. One of my challenges was…
4. One example of a FAIL I/we had was…
5. One thing I will work to improve next time is…
Then, comment on at least two posts in this thread. When you comment try to keep the conversation going by asking a question or saying something that makes others want to respond to you.
1. A way that I collaborated and connected with others was when my partner and I had to work together to let the hot water cool down and make sure the salt would get out of the beaker.
2. I was successful during the experiment when I got all of the observations written down and I had all of the information done too.
3. One of my challenges was when we completely changed our train of thought and decided to make the experiment about temperature not materials.
4. A fail I had was when we put the salt into the smaller containers. the salt hasn’t dissolved in 20 min.
5. I will improve the information chart and trails.

I liked how you were descriptive.
I liked how you said your challenges
Was the salt not dissolving really a fail? Did you learn something about the solubility of the salt in that liquid?
the salt not dissolving wasn’t necessarily a fail because it was just a learning experience. The salt would dissolve faster when the temperature went up.
1) One way I collaborated with others was when we picked out our experiment.
2) We were successful in writing the independent and dependent variable and when we were doing our material list.
3) One of the challenges that I faced was trying to remember how to do the scientific question and hypothesis.
4) One example of us failing was when we were doing the cold beaker we did not have enough time.
5) I will work on writing a conclusion.

How did you decide your experiment, did you do the one you did for any specific reason?
I like your overall body of your writing, but you could add more detail.
What will you work on in writing the conclusion?
Was it easy to choose an experiment with another person? How were you able to agree on one idea?
Yes it was easy to decide on the experiment because we both had the same idea.
One way I collaborated and connected with others was when Levi and I worked together to do the experiment. We each paid attention to the water and observed it.
I was successful in making sure I knew exactly when the salt dissolved so that I could stop the stopwatch at the correct time.
One of my challenges and fails was when Levi and I were doing the experiment at first with vegetable oil and salt. The salt did not dissolve after seven and a half minutes. We ended up deciding to use water instead of vegetable oil.
One thing I will work to improve next time is being more descriptive with what materials I needed.
Good job!
I liked how you were descriptive and how you combined fail and challenge into one sentence.
very well thought
Was the salt not dissolving in the oil really a fail? Did you learn something about the solubility of salt in oil?
I learned that salt does not dissolve in oil.
1. One way I collaborated and connected with others was…
I let them say their ideas and I listened to them because most of the time their ideas were better than mine.
2. I was successful in…
Making our experiment work even though it was challenging.
3. One of my challenges was…
I spilled a little but thankfully we didn’t even need the glass.
4. One example of a FAIL I/we had was…
I spilled and we should’ve wrote down the data but we didn’t.
5. One thing I will work to improve next time is…
Writing down the data we collected and maybe picking an easier Independent and Dependent variable.
What did you spill and was it a total setback?
I spilled the butter when it was in the vegetable oil. No it wasn’t a setback because we were done with the butter anyways
I love how you asked a question here. What a great way to keep the conversation going!! Brava!
i like your improvement
I’m sure your the ideas you offered were helpful. How were the ideas you offered valuable?
I said we should write down all of our ideas on our poster and eliminate ones that didn’t work. And I said we should find the elements so we could say why we think one solid didn’t work
One way i collaborated with my partner is when we had to make sure we were doing everything right for our experiment, and we asked each other for help if we needed it. I think i was successful in writing the conclusion because i think that i worded it really well. One of my challenges was when the butter wouldn’t dissolve because i got frustrated that i had to wait a long time. One fail we did was how we should write our information in the table on our doc and poster because we didn’t know how to write some things. One thing i would improve next time is what materials we use for the experiment because this time our solids were not soluble in oil.
Your I’s are not capitalized, but everything else is good.
The butter not dissolving for a long time required patience for sure. Despite this challenge, did you learn something about the solubility of the butter?
i learned that butter doesn’t dissolve for a long time but it is very squishy.
I liked how you added the details in between your sentences. I thought that your paragraph was very well written.
One way I collaborated and connected with others was explaining our experiment, asking questions, and listening to my partner. I was successful in writing a conclusion and coming up with ideas for the hypotheses and scientific question. One of my challenges were starting of the project and coming up with a procedure, we overcame it by working together and putting our ideas together as one. One example of a fail we made was not writing down all of the data/measurements first. One thing I will work on to improve next time is making sure I have the needed data written down before the conclusion. Also I would be more careful because we had an accidental spill.
Good job on knowing where there is room for improvement and where you succeeded!
I like how you wrote how you overcame your problem.
I like how you over came your problems
A procedure is difficult to write. What would you do differently next time you have to write one?
If Had to rewrite another procedure I would change some of the order of steps.
1) One way I collaborated with Leah was that we had a lot of fun creating are process and doing the experiment.
2) I was successful with making observations, not writing them down but, making them.
3) One of my challenges was being loud.
4) A example of a fail is that we both burned are hand / fingers on the hot plate, and another fail was that I accidentally didn’t start the stop watch so it messed-up our observations.
5) One thing I’ll try to improve next time
5) One thing I’ll try to improve on is being more quiet.
What will you improve next time?
I acsedentaly posted it before I was finished, so I made a comment saying what I want to improve on. In other words, it’s the comment right on top of yours.
Good job on knowing where there is room for improvement and where you succeeded!
1) A way I connected with others during this learning experience is by listening to my group because we had to communicate to get our project done.
2) I was successful in rewriting our procedure because after my group and I modified our experiment I had to fix it so it would fit our experiment.
3) One of my challenges was communacating with my group because sometimes I would get into a little argument with one of my group members.
4) One FAIL my group had is when we were putting oil in a tube with the rock salt and we relized that 1, oil doesn’t dissolve very fast and 2, we can’t put it in a tube because it is not going to dissolve.
5) One thing I need to improve on the next time is working with my group better.
very descriptive
Collaborating with partners is not always easy especially when you disagree with each other. How were you able to move forward in the scientific process when you disagreed?
When we got into these arguments we just calmed down, then we told each other why we thought what we thought and analyzed a solution.
1. One way I collaborated and connected with others was communicating and explaining my ideas to my partners. When I did this, my whole group had a better picture of where our process was going.
2. I was successful in discovering the results. I would pay close attention to what was happening in our experiment and then would wait till we got them.
3. One of my challenges was staying focused. This would sometimes happen because I would get distracted but I would always get back on track.
4. One example of a fail we had was when our butter would not melt so we had to adjust our whole experiment.
5. One thing I will work to improve next time is to check every step of our procedure. This way, there is a less chance of us having a problem and a better chance for our experiment to be a success.
Was everyone in your group paying attention to the results or was it just you?
i lik your explanations
I like how you were honest on your questions.
Whoops I meant
I liked how you were honest on your questions.
Was the butter not dissolving really a fail? Did you learn something about the solubility of the butter?
The fact that the butter did not dissolve was not exactly a fail. I did gain some knowledge from it. I learned that the butter has to literally be touching the water in order to melt. So it was a first attempt in learning!
1. One way I collaborated and connected with others was that I was listing to what they were saying.
2. I was successful in coming up with a way to do the experiment.
3. One of my challenges was figuring out the process of the experiment.
4. One example of a fail we had is that our experiment was all wrong.
5. One thing I will work to improve next time is to make sure I do even more.
What do you mean you did your experiment “wrong”? Is an experiment ever wrong? Did you learn something from your mistake?
1) One way I collaborated with others is that both me and my partner thought of very good ideas, and later combined them to make a really interesting experiment.
2) I was successful in timing the solubility and getting the averages for the times. Also, we easily figured out which liquid has the most solubility which was an advantage for the conclusion.
3) One of my challenges was writing the conclusion and figuring out a good way to explain our whole experiment in a couple paragraphs. Also, the conclusion had to include our challenges which were hard to explain.
4) One fail that we had was that we had 2 liquids, one of which we realized that the rock salt did not dissolve in. That means that we had only 1 working liquid, causing us to bring in another liquid which was time consuming.
5) Something that I will work on for next time is to be more prepared so I don’t have to waste time in the middle of the project.
Was the fact that the rock salt did not dissolve in one of the liquids really a fail? Did you learn something about solubility of the rock salt in that liquid?
This is a wonderful paragraph. I really liked how you explained your evidence in very much detail.
1. I collaborated with my partner when our experimenet didn’t go as planned and we had to change our experiment. Another time i worked well with my partner was when we started working on the procedure.
2. I was successful in doing the experiment. My partner and I switched off jobs like using the stopwatch and stirring.
3. One of my challenges was trying to get the baking soda to dissolve because we were using too much baking soda.
4, One example of a fail was when we first did our experiment, we were trying to dissolve butter in vegitable oil. That wouldn’t work so we changed our experiment to baking soda and water.
5. One thing I will work on next time is think everything through because we didn’t think through what we were doing and that is why we had to change our experiment multiple times.
Was the butter not dissolving in the oil really a fail? Did you learn something about solubility of the butter in oil?
I love that you asked a question in your comment! This keeps the conversation going.
I now think that the butter not dissolving in the oil wasn’t a FAIL but maybe a more major setback. I think in the moment it was like a fail because the planning had to be changed and we didn’t think our materials through.
1) one way i collaborated with other was not only having my desk partner go over my google doc report, but two other classmates go over it too.
2)I was successful h the experiments. knowing when to do something different or when we do another part of the experiment.
3)one of my challenges was to agree with my partner. sometimes we wouldn’t agree on how we would run the experiment and what materials we would use.
4) one example of a fail we had was thinking to put in like a 4th cup of rock salt into our liquids. thankfully another group told us that was too much rock salt, but we ended up having to change what the measurements said.
5)one thing i will do better next time would be knowing to always document right after you run your experiment, not later based off of memory.
How did you handle disagreements with your partner? How were you eventually able to agree and move through the scientific process?
we eventually compromised and were able to complete our experiment successfully
One way I collberated and connected with my parter Noah R, is I communcated my ideas and thoughts about the project. What I mean, is that when there was a problem with the vegable oil in the beggining right away, so I told noah what I thought and then we changed the oil to water.
I was successful in staying focuson my project and not getting destracted by other gropus. Also I was successful in focusing on th experient to get the exact measurements.
One challenge/fail I had was at the beggining the rock salt was taking a long long time to dissolve, even when we added heat. Another challenge was that when we putthe beaker on the hot plate it was areasdy so hat might of messed with the results of the project.
Next time I would inmprove on having water as the liquid and not oil. Also I would try to get a little more exact of the measurements
Was the rock salt not dissolving in the oil really a fail? Did you learn something about the solubility of rock salt in oil?
1. One way that my partner and I worked together was that we took turns doing jobs like timing the rock salts and filling up water. We also had very good communication.
2. I was successful in finding a conclusive result with a clear patter. I was also good at working with my partner.
3. One of my challenges was following the procedure. It was hard not to speed the results up without disrupting the procedure.
4. One example of fail was when we took too much than we could chew and our experiment took 9 minutes. We had to change our procedure after that.
5. One thing that I would change would be how many rock salts would go in the flask. There were a bunch and the experiment would take awhile.
What made your communication with your partner good? What advice could you give your classmates who might be struggling with communication?
What made our groups communication good is that when an idea or problem that we have found we would politely confront them and the other on speak there stuff and then yo. A tip i could give about communication is that you have to let others say there ideas before you do.
1. One way I collaborated and connected with others was When me and my partner too turns doing different jobs.
2. I was successful in Turning in the project on time and getting good and acurate data.
3. One of my challenges was finding a good mixture of liquids and solids.
4. One example of a FAIL I/we had was When me and my partner tried to dissolve butter in vegetable oil and it did not work.
5. One thing I will work to improve next time is Making shure that the mateirials that I choose will work together.
I love the ongoing learning conversation between teacher and students. Please share this model with your peers as it is an incredible way to LEARN OUT LOUD.
