Basketball Unit Reflection

Now that our basketball unit is finished it is time for us to reflect on our growth during the unit.  Please answer the following questions by replying to this post on my blog.  Make sure to use complete sentences, capitalization, and correct punctuation.  Your answers for each question must be two to three sentences not just one sentence.  I am looking to see some depth and thinking in your answers.

  1. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified those one to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
  2. Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
  3. Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE?

After answering the questions please reply to 2 of your classmates responses. You should comment on what they said by asking questions or making a statement about what they said. Unlike last year I am looking for meaningful replies not just I agree… or that is cool…those are very generic and I want you to put some thought into your reply.

  1. Example of a reflection that meets grade level expectations:
    1. Before the basketball unit started I really wanted to work on my shooting. Last year I could never make a shot during drills or during the scrimmages. I think I got better shooting the ball because when we played lighting I wasn’t the first one out all the time and I actually made some shots. I think I got better at shooting because I really tried my best during all the shooting drills we had to do during the unit.

    2. When we were scrimmaging a few weeks ago a player on the other team made a really awesome shot so I told him great shot and gave him a high five.

    3. I think that sometimes when Adon Brugman is explaining things I talk to my friends instead of listening to his instructions. Going forward I need to make sure I talk less to my friends and listen more to what Adon Brugman is telling me.

    • 1. I really wanted to work on my layups because I could never make any layups. I think I got a little better at this because I don’t miss every layup but I don’t make all of them either. I worked hard on my layups during lightning and now I can control the strength that I put into my layup.

      2. When someone didn’t make a shot I said to them maybe next time.

      3. I think I could improve on my sportsmanship because sometimes I get mad when something doesn’t go my way.

    • I just wanted to get better at participating and understanding what I’m doing. I think I’ve gotten better at understanding what I’m doing and getting better at the skills, but in scrimmages It stayed the same where I just walk where everyone else is running and I just stand there. I think it’s because when no one passes the ball to me, I don’t do anything about it. When they do pass it to me, I pass it to someone else because I know I’m not that good at sports in general.

I don’t really think I showed good sportsmanship, but I never showed bad sportsmanship either.

I can make sure my voice is heard in the team so I can do more things than just follow people.

    • 1. I wanted to get better at shooting the ball so I can make score some points but I did get better but I got better at getting rebounds and passing. I also want to work on passing so I got better at throwing a pass without using all my force.

      2. I believe I had good sportsmanship is when I passed to every teammate possible and did not get mad about anything and had fun.

      3. I think I can cheer for all my teammates.

    • 1. I wanted to work on shooting and dribbling. During the unit, I think that I stayed the same with my skills. I will say that I do think that I got better at some dribbling movements because I could practice them over and over of them. I think that my shooting stayed the same because I really wasn’t practicing the shooting motion over and over again.

      2. I believe that I demonstrated good sportsmanship when one of my teammates made a shot who normally didn’t believe that they could do anything in basketball. When my teammate made the shot I was so happy and I said a great job, do it again. I think that I can continue to demonstrate good sportsmanship and to stop talking when Adon Brugman is talking.

  2. 1. At the beginning of the unit, I wanted to work on passing to the open person. I think I could still work on that but it got better. The other thing I wanted to work on was just having fun when playing. I think I did that.
    2. I demonstrated good sportsmanship when my team was beating the other team by a lot. I didn’t rub it in.
    3. Just remember to enjoy it.

    • I really appreciate your answer to question 3. I often times when playing any kind of sport have to remind myself to just enjoy playing the game and not worry about winning.

  3. 1. I really wanted to work on my shooting because before I used to a lot of time miss shots and it was annoying. But now during games, I find my self, making shots that I used to not be able to make.
    2. When somebody on my team missed a shot I said something like “so close!”
    3. I want to not talk so much when Adon Brugman is talking

  4. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified those one to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is? 1 skill that I wanted to work on is shooting. Another skill I wanted to work on is not double dribbling. I think that I improved on shooting, because we practiced it a lot. I think that I stayed the same with double dribbling.

Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit. A time that I demonstrated good sportsmanship is after some of the scrimmages, I told some people, Good game.

Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE? Not getting so competitive.

  5. 1. When it started I felt like I should get better at getting baskets and being able to dribble down the court swiftly without dropping the ball. I think I improved but not because everyone was pushing me, it was because people were actually passing the ball to me a lot more often than last year so I was able to get a lot more baskets and have more time to dribble down the court.
    2. I never got extremely mad at anyone and even if I was losing by 100 points I still said “nice shot”
    3. I just wish everyone could have a lot of good sportsmanship and if I make a shot I feel really bad when someone acts like I just won the lottery because they are acting like I can’t make a shot.

  6. 1. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified those ones to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is? I wanted to work on passing more to girls. I think that I did better because I had more dishes to them and they got more shots.
    2. Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit. I passed to one kid and he missed and I got the rebound 5 more times and passed to him after 6 times he made it I high fived him and said great job.
    3. Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE? I can get less angry and rough.

  7. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified that one to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
actually, SHOOT a BASKET. and it stayed the same because I just can’t shoot.
Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
saying a good job to someone who shot a basket.
Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE?
    maybe shoot better????

  8. I wanted to work on my handles and get better at faking people and dropping them. I also wanted to get better at making layups. I have improved on my handles by going slow and taking my time. I did not make a lot of layups because I passed the ball more then i shot. In class a person messed up i told her that it is fine you are probably better then me at shooting. One thing I want to work on is to not get frustrated.

  9. 1.)I wanted to work on fast break layups and defending bigger
players. I feel like I worked on layups because I am now successfully making my layups on fast breaks because my team is helping me. I have proved to be able to play defense against bigger players because I can stuff them. What has helped me is that when we make big plays, it inspires me to make big plays.
2.)Sadie made a great defensive play, I went over to congratulate her.
3.) I think I can stop worrying about if my team will win, I should just have fun.

  10. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified those ones to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is? I wanted to work on was shooting and I think I got better because I was the last girl out in lightning so I think I improved because of the repetition of the shooting drills.
Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit. Even when someone didn’t make their shot I still would say “Good Job!”
Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE? I think I could improve on talking while the teacher is talking.

  11. 1. I wanted to work on my shooting and offense. I think I did really well on my shooting and made a few 3 pointers. I don’t really think that I improved my offense that much but I did get passed to a lot. The thing that really helped me was the shooting drills.

    2. Whenever I played at the end of the game I would tell the other team a good game even if we won or lost.

    3. Next time I think I can improve with sometimes I am talking to friends while Adon Brugman is talking.

  12. Before the Basketball unit, I really wanted to work on my passing. Last year I would always have the ball hit out of my hand. I think I got better at passing during this unit by doing the drills. Like the passing drill with the cones. During the unit, a player on my team made a great shot and I gave them a hi-five. I think when Adon Brugman is talking sometimes I am talking to my friends instead of listening and then I sometimes don’t know what we were doing.

  13. 1.I wanted to improve on dribbling the ball with a little more control and my offense in general. I feel that I got a bit better at dribbling since I got the ball passed a lot to me so I could practice more.I feel that I got better on offense since I kept on moving around and trying to get open. Also since I’m on the girls basketball team,I think that also helped me.
2.I feel that when one of my teammates didn’t make a basketball while playing lightning or a game like that,I didn’t say mean things instead I said”nice try” or “so close”.
3.I can improve my time by not responding when other people are shouting out and saying “shhhhh” or “be quiet” but instead just ignoring them and letting the teacher take care of it.

  14. Early October we started our basketball unit. I felt like I need to work on some things but I think that my handling is pretty good because I practice with by older brother and it helps a lot. I felt that it wasn’t a good unit because including me I am competitive and way more than I usually am and I need to work on that and people weren’t passing to others. Next unit is soccer and I think that its going to be better and better games! My goal is to improve in sportsmanship and to practice more.

  15. 1. I wanted to to get better at shooting because I don’t really know how. I feel like I got a little bit better because now I can make a few shots. I also feel like I wanted to get better at dribbling because I wanted to get better at looking up when i dribble and also make sure I stay in control so I don’t lose the ball.
    2. I believe I did when ever my teammate made a shot or the other team made a shot I would say good job.
    3. I want to improve on not talking when Adon. Brugman is talking because some times when he was explaining what we were doing that day I would talk.

  16. 1 I want fast breaks and layups because those are the most common shots that players shot because then I can successfully make fast breaks and layups and I want to work on my passing skills so I don’t get the stolen from me. I learned that the shooting drills help me.2 I demonstrated good sportsmanship by giving every player a chance to have the ball. 3 I can improve by listening more to directions so I don’t get in trouble and get a bad grade.

  17. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified those one to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
I wanted to work on catching the ball and also making baskets because l wasn’t really that good at catching the ball and getting the ball in the baskets because the baskets were kind of high and I wasn’t that good at shooting. I think that I got better at catching the ball and getting baskets because in lightning one time I’m pretty sure I was the last or second to last girl out (when we played with our shooting drill groups) because I actually made baskets. Also when we play basketball with girls and boys I actually got the ball a couple times.
Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
I think I demonstrated good sportsmanship because I didn’t yell at people if they didn’t make a basket and when we did girls vs girls and we started to fight, we just kind of argued but we didn’t yell at each other (usually).
Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE?
Maybe when we do this unit next year or we do something else with catching and a ball, I want to try and get the ball more and maybe ask for the ball and not just wait until someone passes to me.

  18. 1) I wanted to learn how to shoot free throws. I think I stayed the same but got a little better because when we did the shooting drills I could not make the free throws but when we did it in Lightning I made it one time. I think that when we did the drill it helped me to get better.
    2) Even if I didn’t get the ball sometimes I would say “good job” and thing like that.
    3) Most of the time I talk to my friends when Adon Brugman is explaining so I could not talk to my friends when Adon Brugman is talking.

  19. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Once you have identified those ones to two skills do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE?
The basketball skills I want to work on is shooting and using the backboard and also dribbling with my left hand better because when I run and dribble with my left hand it gets all messy and not in control. I think that my shooting and dribbling skills have improved because I look at the backboard when I shoot and also it’s helped me when we do the shooting drills and the dribbling drills. When I showed good sportsmanship is when we were playing an all-girls basketball game and when someone on my team or on the other team makes a shot or tries to make a shot I say good job or good try. What I can do to make my time and PE better listen and focus more instead of talking to my friends and also give all of my efforts.

    Thank you!!!
    Bye

  20. 1. I did not want to improve on any skills.

    2. One time when we were scrimmaging, one of my teammates made a good shot so I said good job and gave him a high five. He seemed happy after that.
    3. I can talk less to my friends when I shouldn’t. Sometimes when Adon Brugman is giving directions on something, I will talk to my friends instead of listening.

  23. 1. Before the basketball unit started I really wanted to work on my free throws and shooting. Last year I could never make a shot during drills or during the scrimmages. I think I got better shooting the ball because when we played lighting I think I got better at shooting because I really tried my best during all the shooting drills we had to do during the unit and during the scrimmages.

2 Every time I made A shot I high fived someone. Also when someone else made a shot I said a good job to them.

Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE?
Trying some more. Like I said before I despise sports so I think in future quarters I should try to get a better grade.

I think that my layups got better because not only in PE but in hafsaka I was better at getting kids out(maybe because they where all 5/6th graders) but I was more consistent and could make more shots from the free throw line as well.

Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
I think that i demonstrated good sportsmanship when passed to people that didn’t get passed to a lot. For example I got the ball passed into me and I could go to the hoop, but instead I passed to Rebecca and we made the play!!

Going forward what is one thing you can do to improve your time in PE? I can sub in when my team needs me. We also had a small team so we had to stay in for 3 times in a row.

  38. 1. I wanted to get better at dribbling low. I want to no let the other team steal the ball from me. I think I got a little better at it. I learned how to hold my hand out so that someone can’t just hit it. I also realized why it’s good to dribble low because while I was watching other people dribble huge, I was thinking how easy it would be for me to steal from them.

    2. I think I had good sportsmanship when I let my teammates go in for me. They hadn’t played a lot and even though I wanted to play I let them.

2 I always congratulate people when they make shots and I am normally pretty chill during games and do not care if we lose .
3 I think that I should try harder to participate and I should work harder on drills. I also think that I should try to get passed too.
