Mold Terrarium Follow-Up

Once the mold began to grow, how did the appearance of the mold change over time?

The mold didn’t change because there isn’t mold on the bread yet.

Hopefully, when we buy foods at a grocery store they are not moldy. What do you think food manufacturers do to foods to prevent the growth of mold?

(Hint! Using your Alan November research skills, try googling this answer. Be sure to include your source when you answer this on your blog.)

What I think: I’ve heard that at McDonalds they put lemon juice on the apple slices so that they don’t turn brown. Maybe food manufacturers use some chemical or juice to prevent the growth of mold on the food.

What I researched: They can clean the fridge that they keep some food in. Use plastic wrap to wrap open foods.

Many fungi are decomposers. What does this mean? (Hint! Think back to our discussions and research before break)

It means that fungi breaks down dead animals and old food using bacteria.

Make a list of useful things fungi can do. (Hint! Think back to our discussions and research before break)

  • Mold is fungi and mold is in penicillin
  • Yeast is fungi and yeast rises bread
  • Fungi breaks down old food and dead animals
  • Mushrooms are a type of fungi and we eat mushrooms (the safe ones)
