Building a Insulator

This week in science, we worked in teams to create a water bottle insulator that kept the water inside the bottle the coldest for the longest amount of time. First, we planned what we would need, how we would build it, and sketched our first design. Next, we tested our design to see how well our insulator worked. Below you will see the results and how we will improve our first insulator to make it even better!

An insulator is something that slows heat down.

Here is a picture of our original design:

The materials we used were wool, metal, and rubber bands.

Results! What was the temperature of your water to begin with? After 15 minutes? After 35 minutes?

Time Temperature (in Fahrenheit)
0 minutes 54
After 15 minutes 57
After 35 minutes 61

The engineering process includes thinking about how to make your design better and re-building your product. The improvements that we will make to our insulator is wire.

These changes will improve my insulator because metal is a good insulator.

New results:

Time Temperature (in Celsus)
0 minutes  7  degrees
After 15 minutes  10 degrees
After 35 minutes  11 degrees

Building Reflection

What about the building process was challenging? The creating part.
How did your build differ from your plan? (If your build was different than your plan, update your plan!) Nothing.
How did your group work well together during the build? What would you do again? We didn’t work well together and fought a lot.
How did your group struggle during the build? What would you change? One of the people in my group was being controlling to us.

Reflection on the Gathering

When I went to the Gathering I first noticed that it looked like a very small space but it could fit a lot of people! My first job was to get the food out and wrap them in plastic bags for the people to eat. Some food they had were cookies, cake pops, muffins, and even pie etc! All the broken pieces of food we put in a bag that they let us eat later! A little bit later people started to come in!  I had the biggest job! I had to get them a tray with forks and knives while I had to greet them and ask them how they were doing. After I had to ask them if they wanted sugar and there were 3 different kinds of sugar that people wanted! And then I had to ask them if they wanted some more napkins! Until one of my friends came to thankfully help me.  After that, we had to clean up and we left to come back to school. I had a lot of fun there and would come back again!

Moses Reflection Blog

Moses Reflection

  • Do you think Moses’s model of leadership in the Torah is important to us today?  Why or why not? No, because he wasn’t a leader God was the leader and Moses was one of his assistants.
  • What have you learned about Moses’s life? He did a lot of good and bad things.
  • What have you learned about Moses’s leadership? He isn’t a leader because God was the leader.
  • How do you think you learned most about his life: through text study, skits, presentations, or something else?  Why? Skits, it let us see it in a version as if it happened right now in the 21st century.

Explorers Reflection

What about this project went well for you? Explain. I already knew a little about Marquette so I didn’t need to research a lot more than others.

What about this project did not go well for you? Explain. I don’t think that my presentation was more than 2 min because I forgot about doing making it that long.

How can you create a better project next time? I can make it longer and I could have put more pictures on and I could have written more on each page of my slide.

How did you think the planning process went? Were you able to find all the information you needed? I found a lot but it was difficult because a lot of websites were not trustworthy.

What could Adon Kaufman and Gev. Noorlander do differently next time? Let us do groups.

What impact did explorers make? Explorers are the way how we found new lands and they discover/discovered new places to live.

Chanukah Card Activity

This week, we worked on coding Chanukah Cards. Below you will see my creation and what I thought was comfortable and challenging when doing this assignment.

Here is my card: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/268494813/#editor

What I thought was comfortable about this activity: I have been doing scratch my whole life so I know how to do everything.

What I thought was not challenging about this activity was everything.

Rubberband Boat

This week in science to study potential and kinetic energy we created a moving boat using 2 rubber bands, 5 popsicle sticks, cardboard, 24 inches of tape, and 4 paper clips. To create the boat we went through the engineering design process, which is shown below.

My original boat:

My original design is a boat that is called the S.S. JPJ.

I believe my original design will allow the boat to stay afloat and move through the water because it looks really cool and the way it works makes sense.

When I put my boat in the water tub this is what happened: it broke and died R.I.P.

The changes I am going to make to improve my boat design are changing the whole thing.

My re-built boat:

I believe my new design will allow the boat to stay afloat and move through the water better because it is flat to flout.

When I put my newly designed boat in the water tub this is what happened, it failed again R.I.P.

Some more improvements I could make to my boat is everything!

This challenge was not comfortable because we did not really get it.

This taught me about potential and kinetic energy because are’s didn’t have any of that energy.

Rapunzel Planning Reflection Blog

How did spending more time on planning to improve your final blueprint?

It made it better because we had to do it many times because are ideas were very hard!

How did your group come to one final plan after brainstorming several ideas?

Only one worked so it worked out pretty well!

Why do you think taking more time to plan was important?

It gave us many ideas and gave us ideas we wouldn’t have thought of.

Did brainstorming with multiple people help you come up with more ideas? How?

No, we only had 4 ideas and only one worked.

What would you differently during the planning process next time?

Come up with more ideas.
