6/7th grade: Black History Research Projects

Students in grades 6th and 7th are entering the drafting phase of their research project which ends by creating an infographic.

Students investigated a topic around Black History Month. Next, we gathered credible sources, and we read and took notes on our sources for the purpose of answering: Who, What, Where, When, Why/How. Students were given options on how to take notes, and many developed their own system. Then, students choose a focus or angle for their topic, which is used during the selecting and collecting phases of the writing process. We are currently moving into immersion into infographics and getting ideas from our mentor texts to create our own draft.  Finally kids will draw or create their infographic. We hope to present them to grades 3 and 4 who are also learning about Black History topics.

This project hits many of our sub-standards, but the priority standards are:

  • I can conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources, and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
  • I can craft informative/explanatory texts.
  • I can produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
