Newspaper Shoe Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only newspaper, 24 inches of tape, and one scissors, you and your partner need to create one shoe that fits either you or your partner’s foot. The shoe must be able to come on and off without falling apart.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Communication):

My goal for communication today within my team is not to be so difficult with my teammates.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out the plan>

I am going to make a slide. This shoe would be easy to make and easy to put on or off.

Why I think my plan will be successful: Because it is easy to put on and take off and then it would be sturdy because we could use all the tape on the on the strap.

Our Group’s Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out the plan>

Our plan is to make slip-on slippers.

We chose this plan because it was a combination of both of my and Smishelow21’s plans.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction we could have not enough tape or we can tear the shoe.

Each partner will be responsible for I will be the taper and Smishelow21 will cut.

After the Build

<insert photo of completed shoe>

Our design worked well because it was somewhat sturdy and easy to get on and off.

This activity was challenging because my foot was really wide so we had a hard time getting the strap length just right.

This activity was comfortable because our design was simple and easy t0 make.

I met my teamwork communication goal by not getting frustrated so I wouldn’t be difficult.

A strength of my partnership was we didn’t argue once.

An area of growth for my partnership is being a little bit faster workers.

For our next challenge, my new teamwork communication goal for myself is to not be negative at all.

Textual Tuesday

Quote: B’makom Sha’yn ish, tishtadel lehiyot ish.

Translation: In a place where there is no man try to be a man.

What does this mean: I think this means that if something or someone is doing the wrong thing do the right thing.

Goal: I am going to try to help people that get bullied.

My Prior Knowledge of What an Invasive Species Is

What do you think invasive species means?

I think it means that species take territory away from other animals.

What does it mean to invade something?

To take something with force.

Can animals invade?

Yes, because there are some territorial animals like wolves they like to have territory and the other wolves want to take it away.

What about plants?

No, because plants just grow wherever and whenever they want.

How might invasive species affect other organisms in their environment?

The other animals might die because of fights that other “nations” have to take territory, they could starve from lack of food, and their homes could get taken away.

Native American Experience

Some Native Americans do not like the term Native American. Explain why they reject this name.

Because they are not “Americans” meaning that this wasn’t American at that time so they are Natives.

One person in the BBC Video said that living in poverty does not mean they are poor. What do you think he meant by that? That most of the people there are poor.

Some Native Americans approve of the team name Redskins. What is their reason for approving this name while others do not?  Because it was a team from all the way from 1960 so why do they have a problem now?

In the CNN segment, there was a story told about a woman who used to approve of the name Redskins, and now does not. What changed? Why does she no longer approve of the name? She found out how they were using the name.

How can non-Native people help others learn about Native Americans current issues? What can we do to help? We can tell our friends and family members what is going on through blogs, videos, articles and more.

Reflecting on ETC

How have you changed as a group member this year in ETC?  I think that I have improved at not raising my voice as much because I get fewer voice warnings.

How has working in ETC made you a better student in other classes? (Social Studies, ELA, Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Math, Science) I am quieter and I can sit for a longer time.

Thinking about my blog posts, I have improved by being more detailed in my responses because the teachers have helped improve my work.

In the future, I plan to improve my blog posts by being more detailed because I have 1-2 answer sentences.

Cup Holder Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials ( 6 straws, 1 piece of paper, a piece of tinfoil, 12 inches of masking tape, 2 paperclips, 2 pieces of string, 1 envelope, and 2 pipe cleaners)  create a structure that holds two cups as high as possible and as far apart as possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for participation today while working in my group is not to be a rage monster

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out the plan>

I would make a lot of supports (as many as I can) and the surface

Why I think my plan will be successful: because it is stable and won’t break easily

My Groups Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out the plan>

We chose this plan because we chose it because it had a lot of support and is tall.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction it will  be off balance

Each group member will be responsible for tape construction and cups

after the Build

<insert photo of completed chain>

Our design worked well because We got a lot of height and width.

This activity was challenging because one of the towers kept falling over.

This activity was comfortable because we had a good grasp of what we are doing.

I met my participation goal by helping put on tape and cups.

A strength of my team as they were easy to work with, they could have their plans shifted a little bit.

An area of growth for my team is not to say it is one person’s fault.

For our next challenge, my new participation goal for myself is to get a really active job.

Paper Chain Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials (two pieces of construction paper, 1 pair of scissors, 1 ruler and one 12-inch strip of masking tape) create the longest paper chain possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for teamwork today is to not be super bossy

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out a plan>

Why I think my plan will be successful: I think it would be successful because it’s going straight to the work

My Groups Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out a plan>

We chose Smishelow21’s plan because it made the most sense.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction The strips might be to thin and break.

Each group member will be responsible for I am the Monitor, Smishelow21 is the taper with Akaswan21, and Mmesserman21 is the connector

After the Build

<insert photo of completed chain>

Our design worked well because it could get more strips.

This activity was challenging because of people bending the rules to their advantage.

This activity was comfortable because we had a pretty good setup.

I met my teamwork goal by not yelling and doing mean stuff when we didn’t win.

A strength of my team was we were super organized.

An area of growth for my team is we need to find a way not to talk when someone else is talking.

For our next challenge, my new teamwork goal for myself is to do as much as I can to help my group/

Native American Mascots

Explain why or why not Mascots meant to resemble Native American people be changed.

they shouldn’t because they are iconic and some are meant to show respect.

Should Native American people be given something in return for these mascots? Why?

Yes, because they are resembling them so something should be given back.

Do you think it would be important to you to change these mascots if a mascot was made of you? Explain.  No, because if they did then they would have done it for respect.

Should these teams and the government give Native Americans reparations? Why?

Yes, because the settlers just took the land with no intention of giving it back.

Me as a Learner

In August, I thought the following about myself as a learner: I thought that I was smart and I got everything about what learner I was but now  I need to add stuff.

Today, I would add the following to my puzzle piece….because I get frustrated really easily, I need people to stop talking so much when the assignment is due that day or it would be homework.

Today, I would tweak or modify my puzzle piece by…because I would accept peaceful music, not like heavy metal or anything like that.

I think I’ve already grown this year as a learner by not having no music at all now I can learn with peaceful music.

Thinking about working in teams in ETC, my classmates can best support my learning needs by supporting me when I get angry.

Columbus debate reflection

Explain how your group worked together before the debate (during research). Did you work well together?

We research on our own then combined our information. Yes.

Explain how your group worked together during the debate. Did you work well together?

We highlighted our info and then said it at different times.

What can you do differently next time? Why will this help you and your group improve?

We can research together so we don’t overlap our info. This will help because we had some info that was the same.

Explain how this debate influenced your opinion on Columbus.

It didn’t I never liked Columbus and never will.
