Roller Coaster Lab Write Up

  • Potential energy: energy that is stored
  • Kinetic energy: equivalent to motion energy
  • Conservation of energy: The basic laws of physics.
  • Gravity: What makes us sty down on earth
  • Velocity: How fast you can make it go
  • Friction: When two objects scrape together
  • Slope: Ride/Run
Materials I used:
I used Duck Tape, a Foam Tube, a Utility Knife, Scissors, an I-pad, and Marbles

Visuals of my project: There is a tall tube, midway there is a loop, and it ends.

Roller Coaster Phase II

Summary of my project: My team and I tested the second version of our roller coaster and we think it went well.  The design we tried in phase I failed because it got cockeyed due to poor alignment.  We were unable to fix the bend in the tube and decided to move on to phase II.  The second design for our roller coaster was easier to keep aligned because we only used one tube instead of four as in our previous attempt.  My team and I decided to mount our roller coaster on a wall rather than on a shelf or on the floor.   In phase II of our design, we decided to only have 1 loop (last time we had two).   We decided this would work better because in our first attempt the tube collapsed and blocked the marble.  We could not find a way to keep the tube open when we put in a loop.

What starting height was needed for the marble to make it through the loop most of the time?
We determined a starting height of 1 meter and 33 centimeters was needed for the marble to make it through the loop most of the time.
What can you determine about the relationship between potential energy and kinetic energy?

Potential energy gives the marble enough energy to make it through the loop without getting stuck.  When the marble is raised, the higher the beginning point the more potential energy, or stored energy, the marble has.  This potential energy is released and turns into kinetic energy when the marble is dropped.  The higher the marble is at the beginning the more potential energy it has and the more kinetic energy that can be released.  This kinetic energy allows the marble to make it through the loop.  Since our coaster was mounted vertically there was not that big of a need for the potential energy because we had gravity to help us.

No

What artistic/decorative elements could you add to make your machine more visually appealing?

We have not put any yet.

Impact of a Pharaoh

Which Pharaoh did you study?

Menkaure.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your pharaoh? Why did you find this to be so interesting?

He built the smallest pyramid in Giza. I found this so interesting because it took about 20 yrs. to make the pyramids.

What was the most challenging aspect of research while studying your pharaoh? Why?

Finding the information on how to pronounce his name.

What was the most challenging aspect of working with a partner throughout this project? Why?

Finding what I should do. There wasn’t that much to do because it’s really a 2-man job

.What do you still wonder about your pharaoh or about pharaohs in general?

how much children he had.

Memoir Update

We’ve been working on writing memoirs in ELA for the past few weeks. Here is an update on what I’ve accomplished/learned at each stage of the writing process.

The part of the writing process that has been the most comfortable for me has always been drafting the memoir because if I have an idea I had an idea I know what to say.

The part of the writing process that has been the most challenging for me has always been generating ideas because the first time I had a good idea and just stuck with it. It is hard to think of more ideas when you’re set on one in particular.

Immersion

I’ve learned the characteristics of a memoir include: the whole writing process and emotional writing,

I think the characteristic I really want to focus on in my writing is generating ideas because I’m not very good at it.

My favorite memoir mentor text was My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother because the author is like my little sister.  Her writing was very realistic. The dialogue between the brother and sister are exactly how siblings actually act.

Generating Ideas/Selecting

Why do you want to share this idea/story with others?

It was the perfect Shabbat everything is in place.

What emotions do you want your reader to feel as they read your memoir?

special

Drafting

Here is my first draft:

(insert a picture from writer’s notebook)

One thing I think I did really well is being specific because I Gev. Kimmel told me about giving something without a personality a personality.

As I head into editing and revising, one thing I want to focus on is making my writing meaningful because there’s not much emotion.

Stay tuned for another post soon as I work on revising my first draft. If you have any SHE (specific, helpful, empathetic) feedback, please leave it as a comment!

Elements of Plot

What book are you currently reading?

172 Hours to The Moon

Why did you choose this book?

My sister said it was a good scary book.

Thinking about your book, Who are the main characters?

Mia, Antoine, Midori.

What was the inciting incident, or the moment that takes place that creates the story?

When there is an ad about going to the moon.

What smaller problems happened in the book?

All the experienced astronauts died.

Have you reached the climax of your book? What was the big moment of tension?

When they see the alien code when they turned on the lights.

Have you reached the resolution? If yes, is it what you thought would happen? If not, how do you think the problem will be resolved?

They all die on moon base DARLAH 2.

What type of conflict occurs in your book?

Character Vs. Nature because the alien is not a character or person it’s a thing of nature.
