Editorial Unit: Writers Workshop

For our next writers unit we will be focusing on writing editorials. An editorial is a short essay that presents a writer’s opinion on a current issue. Editorials are meant to influence the public’s opinion and sometimes cause people to take action.

Together we will be reading, discussing and analyzing editorials on various issues that are facing our community, state, country and even the world at large.  Students will have the opportunities to listen , read, watch and react to news stories that will excite, frustrate or motivate them to take a stand.

To keep the enthusiasm going at home, I am asking that you help in the following ways.

  1. Locate editorials from newspapers, magazines and the internet to discuss with your student.
  2. Help your student identify the authors opinion and details they use to support their opinion.
  3. Ask your student about editorials they read in class and “hot topics”.

Writing editorials will allow your child to share their opinions on current events by having them take the time to stop, think, research, develop and present an argument to an audience who will listen. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out!

  1. I’m looking forward to seeing what the kids write about. Thanks for the ideas for how we can help with this at home.
