Second Attempt at Building a Racer

1. Given the challenge and the performance of your car on Test Drive #1, what change(s) did you make for Test Drive #2?
We made the rubber band bigger so it could have more energy and then it would go further.
2. What differences did you predict these changes would make in your car’s performance? What makes you think this?
I thought that it would make it go further, we thought that because we saw our friend’s build and saw that they had a large rubber band so we thought we would give it a shot.
3. Think about the variables such as the size of the spool, weight of the washer or tension of the rubber band. How might these affect how far or how fast your car will go?
The weight would affect the car because it would weigh down the car and slow it down. It would slow down because the rubber band would have to generate more elastic energy.
4. What worked better the second time?
It definitely went further because we shot it right and we had a better build.
5. What still is not quite working?
We still don’t shoot it right on the 1st try.
6. What questions do I have?
None
7. What might I try next?
Lessen the weight of the racer so that it can go further.
8. Explain the energy transfer that is taking place in the racer.
When we pull back the rubber band it is generating elastic energy and when we let go of the band, it converts that elastic energy into kinetic energy sending the racer flying.

Spool Racer Challenge #1

1. What do you like about your initial design?
I like that it is very creative.

2. What has been challenging about the initial design?
We didn’t have enough time to do the original idea.

3. How well did your racer perform in the first race? Did it go far? Fast?
It didn’t perform well because I shot it wrong with the rubber band.

4. How will you modify your design for the second race? What variables do you feel will affect how far and fast the racer goes? Why?
I will find the way to shoot my car without it sometimes going the wrong way because it can go further than that it’s just that I didn’t shoot it right.

5. What have been your strengths and challenges during the design process?
Strengths was that we got the design done on the day we started building it. My challenge was trying to shoot the car right because 1 out 3 times I would actually shoot it right.

This is my final product for the 1st part of this challenge.

This is the original sketch of my car.

6. What questions do you have?
None.

Unequal Pay

1. How did you feel when you realized there was such an unequal pay amount between workers and bosses?
I knew that from the start that the pay was very unequal. When I first heard my paycheck compared to other peoples, I was kind of upset because I don’t think it is fair that I am making ~800 more dollars than most other people.
2. Why does unequal pay between workers and bosses happen?
Sometimes companies think some bosses work harder than other workers and that is not fair but at some points it is true. Another reason is that they are higherups and therefore higher than others.
3. What is a realistic solution to prevent such unequal pay from happening in the future?
Make new jobs for people who either don’t have ones that pay livable or just don’t have jobs at all.
4. What is one topic that has interested you thus far and why is it interesting to you (ex: evictions, utility meters, unequal pay, taxes, rent).
What is really interesting me is rent because most schools don’t teach us about this stuff so this entire unit is actually really helpful for people in the future.

Student Blogging Challenge #8

a. How many weeks of the challenge did you participate in?
I did not miss any.
b. How many comments did you receive from classmates, teachers, or other visitors? (1 sentence)
6
c. Which post did you enjoy writing the most and why? (3 sentences)
I really loved the emoji one. The amount of creativity and fun involved was great. I especially loved the making your own emoji using code because it was a cool idea.
d. Which web tools did you use to show creativity on your blog? (1 sentence)
I used google drawings to make fun pictures for my blog posts.
f. What did you learn about yourself during this challenge? (3 sentences)
I learned that I am not like a lot of people. I learned this by looking at other people’s blogs. It was really interesting to see how people were different from me.
