Book Club One Refection

What is one new idea from book club?
A new idea from bookclub is that I never realized that one of the main themes could be, just like in “Remember the Titans” sports can bring people together. I say this because right now Griff and Eric are not really friends but I feel that because Eric likes basketball and the first scene of the book was in a baksetball court, usually the first scene of books (that Ive read) becomes a key place and usually at the end to show character change.
What is the most interesting part of your book(in your opinion)?
The most interesting part of my book in my opinion is that Griff is two faced. What I mean by this is that when Griff is in the lunchroom and he asks about a teacher’s summer and she said that her dog dies. Griff pretends to be sorry but then when the teacher left, Griff told Eric that he didnt really care about the dog and what the teacher had said. Here I learned what kind of a character Griff is because yes I did learn about other characters and their traits but it never said it in a dialouge form.
In the discussion next time, how can you grow as a collaborator by?

Not interupting as much(because I feel that I might have interuppted too much). Also, giving even more evidence than before to make my claim stronger. Lastly, I want to work on(if I am recorder next time) recording while listening, rather than writing some of the answers after we are done talking about the question.

Og’s Great Adventure Reflection

What did you notice or observe during the challenge?

I noticed that the answer wasnt just given to you after doing the puzzle(the first thing).Instead, one hint led to another and then when you found the final clue, that wasnt the answer, it was actually just a riddle that you typed into the internet. It was very complex and you almost didnt need to think outside the box because, instead the answers were pretty obvious(s0me of them).

What kind of questions did you ask yourself?

Did I already say that? Would this actually work? Is this realistic? Does this make sense/will my group mates understand what I am trying to say?

When did you first begin drawing connections between the different puzzles and pictures?

To be honest my group mates gave a lot of the answers. They are very good at this kind of a thing. I tried to make guesses and I feel that I still tried, but this isnt really my thing and I dont have a lot of backround knowledge on this. Next time, I want to try and document since I understand a little more now what we are doing because instead of documenting, I just kept on guessing and I might have repeated myself and that way if I dont do that, maybe I could guess something and it would be correct.

What were those connections?

I think the connections might of had to do with when they figured out how many spikes were on the dinasour and that gave a clue to the number code component. Then, that helped with everything else because one thing led to another and there were certain links on pictures to get more clues.

What were your biggest clues?

What I said above and also if one thing didnt we work, then we knew that could not be the answer and would guess better off of that.

What was most challenging?

I think what was most challenging was that only one computer was open some of the time so it was hard for us to all see and for me to figure out the codes because I am not the best at that but I hope to get better as we do more of the challenges.

What was your biggest ah-ha moment? Why?

I didnt have many of my own but one that our group had together was when we figured out that the dino spikes had to do with one of the codes. This was big because as I mentioned above, this led us to all the other codes(I think) becuase we used clues from that and skills that we learned from that figure out the rest.

Reflecting on Clue(The Game)

What thinking moves did you use when playing this game?

If somebody already said an answer and it was correct, I kept that in mind and would restate that answer when it was my turn. If it wasnt correct, I wouldnt use that answer in my turn. I also listened to my group mates closely in order to do this and really had to focus. Lastly, I would see if anyone was making a face to see if maybe one of the answers to something was correct or incorrect becuase the person’s face tone would usually change.

How did organizing your information impact your experience playing the game?

I thought my organizer was very detailed because it had 3 categories: who, what, and where. I also had a place to write notes. I feel that this wasnt really working for me because I didnt really need to write down any notes because all I needed to know was if my or any of my teamtes guesses for anything was right or wrong and would record down information based on that. I didnt really write down anything in the end because I was just having fun which I guess is good. Maybe next time though if we ever play this again, I could work on recording any information so I could have a better shot at winning.

Where else do you use these thinking skills?

Sometimes I will use this in basketball during a game.

When might you need this kind of thinking?

If I notice a pattern of what an opponent is doing during the game, I could use that to my advantage. For example, if one player only goes to the basket on the right side and cant dribble on the left, instead of doing defense to early and wasting energy, I can jsut wait until they get to the basket and that way I can just play defense better and maybe even block the ball!? That way, I could also have a mini break and take a “breather” while still on the court. Bassicly thinking/working smarter not harder.

Causes of Slavery

What were 3 causes for slavery?

  • American people needed help with things like their house/kids so they thought that AfricanAmericans could just do their work for them(which is really rude and wrong).
  • Slaves kept on getting sick and dying so they needed more slaves(this might have not been a reason for the start of slavery, but a reason as to why it continued).
  • Slaves rebelled(this also might have not been the start of slavery, but it made Americans super mad and made them even more mad at the other slaves and treat them even worse and made them want more slaves)

What did white slave owners use their slaves for? Why?

They used them to do their work and to take care of their children. Some jobs included working in the field, while others worked inside the house of the masters. The mother slaves had the most work to do because they also had to cook. They did this because they thought that slaves were not even people and didnt deserve respect(which is wrong).

What crops did slaves harvest? Why these crops?

Slaves harvested cotton and tabacco. They also harvested other crops, but mostly these. The reason for this is because these crops could sometimes help when the slaves were sick.

Where were most slaves from? Why?

Most slaves were from Africa. The reason for this was because in Africa there were people from Africa who bought slaves and then gave them to people from America who bought slaves. Other slaves got captured intstead of sold.

Why did so many slaves move to the colonies? Was this their choice? Explain.

This was because of what I said above. It was not their choice to move because they were being forced to move just because of the color of their skin which is super sad and wrong. The way they got to America was that they got onto a ship and were forced into these cramped areas and slaves were almost on top of each other minus a mini divider.

Why were there so many slaves in the colonies?

The reason for this was because thats where people(the Americans) wanted slaves because thats where Americans lived. There were also so many slaves because so many African Americans lived in Africa(says the name, African American).

Reflection on “Clue” the Game

What did you notice or observe during the game?

I noticed that it was very complicated(at least for me) and there were a lot of rules. It was sort of hard for me to focus because I got side tracked because there was just so much to follow and it was hard to keep up. My goal for next time is to focus a little better while playing and be more involved.

What kind of questions did you ask yourself ?

What is the smartest route to take while moving my piece? What are the best questions to ask in order to win the game.

When did you first begin drawing connections between different characters, clues, pieces of information?

I didnt really because there was not a lot of time for our team to play, by the time we got the game set up. Although, one of my teamates actually won because I think they have played clue before, so they knew what questions to ask so Im sure they made a few connections.

What were those connections?

I think one of my teamates connections was because they saw a room and then saw the weapon in it and then they started asking questions based on that. Then after that they started to guess the options of people who could have done something or something like that.

What were your biggest clues?

What I said above. Also when my teamate realized that none of us had a certain card, they then realized that they had won the game.(Pretty sure that is how it works or something like that).

What information seems most important to collect?

I think the main clues and maybe if your teamate is maing a poker face, they might be lying. Also, see if there is a weapon in the room because that could also probobly help you. Lastly, look at the cards of the people and see what they are like to help you maybe figure out a crime that they would do based on character traits, although that might not work because this game is kind of about luck Im pretty sure.

What is the difference between an observation and information?

An observation is something you notice and sort of like an opinion if you have a prediction. Information is actually knowledge or something that is for sure that you know. Just like in clue where there is some information you know for sure and some that are just predictions or guesses.

Cornell Notes Reflection

Did you use the websites provided to you for this activity? Did they help?

I actually did not realize those were there until now because I was sick when we started this project. Im sure they would have helped though if I did use them.

How do you think you can use your cornell notes in the future?

I think if I forget about something or have a question about something, I can go back to those notes as a reference. Maybe also, I could write down questions that come to mind when talking/learning about the colonies. I already started doing to this to one of the sections in my notes.

What are 3 new things you learned from researching the colonies in this way?

  • I learned that there is a place in Wisconsin called “Plymouth campgrounds” or something like that and then there is the real Plymouth in Cape Cod bay, Massachusetts
  • The Pilgrims used to be called the Puritans
  • There used to be a prison specifically meant for people who did not pay their debt

Why did we do this activity?

I think we did this activity because we learned more than just the surface information about colonies and since we are in the colonies unit, this would make sense to learn about. An example of how we learned more than just the surface information was because before we were just learning about that there were 13 colonies, but then we learned about specific ones and who founded them and information like that.

How did you research for this activity?

In the begining I researched using a lot of words and some of them were not needed. For example:”What is debtors prison?” Towards the end, I would type in things like:”debtors prison.” This way I took out the words I didnt need and it gave me better information because it was more credible and detailed.

What were the biggest challenges you encountered during this activity?

It was sometimes hard to find the information right away and Im used to finding the information right away. Instead I would have to scroll down some of the time to find the information. I think it would have helped as I mentioned before if I used the links given to me.

How did you overcome your challenges?

I explained above how I did that. I also would sometimes if I really struggled to find an answer would just put down my best guess if I couldnt find the exact answer.
