Class Comforter

Here in junior kindergarten, we are familiar with our class jobs.  Students take a lot of pride in knowing and completing their job every day.  Some have even figured out the pattern of the job chart and take pride in knowing their job for next week!  While class jobs help with getting things done in our class and keeping us organized, the main reason, or intention, for our job list is to allow us all to take ownership in making our class, our community, run smoothly. We all play our part.  After reading the article I’ve linked above, (which of course I agree with as all four of my own children are graduates of MJDS) I wondered if we should have a “class comforter”. This designated student would be in charge of taking a sick child to the office, or calling home when a friend was out sick, or showing care to someone who needed their help.  Should I have a class comforter in JrK?

The answer is yes.  This year I have six, not including myself.  The fact is that we are all comforters in our class.  It isn’t just one person’s job to see that we are all safe and feeling good.  We are all responsible for each other. We live these values in our class community.  It goes beyond helping if we get sick at school.  It starts with each child feeling comfortable with themselves, then reaches beyond to trust and children comforting each other.  I notice it throughout our day, when we wait for each other, or practice including our friends, or, like today, when we all clapped when a friend worked through a problem for the first time.  And when we need to feel uncomfortable a little in order to struggle and grow, we know that we can because our friends (including me) are there to comfort us through it.  So, if you stop in our class, don’t look for “class comforter” on our job chart.  It’s not simply one person’s job.  It’s everyone’s job, every week.
