How to help close the hunger gap

1. Explain what the four factors of poverty are and how they impact one’s life.

Education because some people in poverty can’t afford basic education or they live in a area where there isn’t good education.

Housing because some people can’t afford housing.

Food because if you don’t have money you can’t buy food and then you can die because you don’t have food.

Family because if you family doesn’t have money for education you can’t go to school and if you don’t have good education in your family history it’s possible people could get a bad education.

2. Explain how the cycle of poverty works.

no money for food, bad health conditions–lack of education–lack of opportunity–low income.

3. How do we help people get healthy food cheaply (make sure your answer is realistic)?

We can make other things cheaper for example (education, and living in houses/housing) so people have ore money for food. We wan send letters to the government and write down ideas to make things cheaper.

What government policy suggestions do you have?

Make things cheaper so there’s less people in poverty.

If I were on SNAPS…

1. What is SNAPS? SNAPS is Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program a federal nutrition assistance program.

2. What is the average monthly benefit for someone on SNAPS? The average monthly benefit for someone on SNAPS is $126.00

3. On average, I spend _________on food per week. On average I spend about $568.20 per month.

4. My life would be different if I were on SNAPS because. The monthly benefit on snap is $126.00 and I spend more in a month then that on average.

Cycle of Poverty

1. What factors can lead to poverty? A factor that can lead to poverty is education. Because some people cant get education. Then you can’t get a job because you don’t have education/smarts to work a good paying job. Then you don’t have money so your in poverty.

2. What circumstances can fuel long-term poverty?

3. How can poverty affect succeeding generations? Poverty affects succeeding generations. Because if you grow up in poverty you don’t live in a good neighborhood. Then there’s no good schools to go to so you can’t get a job. Because you don’t have a good education and then your in poverty when you grow up.

4. Which members of our society suffer most?

Experiential Exdous

  1. I am excited to create the experience for the kindergarten because I remember how fun it was when I was in kindergarten.
  2. Something that has been challenging was coming up with things to do with the parsha my partner and I are doing.
  3. My favorite part of the exdous story is the last part when moses and the slaves get freed and when they cross the water.

Classroom Economy – Summary of Learning

  • As someone in this experience, tell your story.  Describe your experience. Tell us about the highs and the lows.  What were your major take-aways? What did you learn? How did you like it?  Be sure to explain your answers. My job in this activity was a blog poster, which meant I had to write blog posts every week about what we were doing in class.  I also had to assign blog posts to classmates. I got paid money for doing my job, but I also got a bonus if people did their job (but if I did not let my teacher know I deserved my raise, I would not get it).  The game itself was fine because I really did not like my job; it was annoying to do my blog posts (but it was fun assigning other people work). The highs of the game was that I learned how to do taxes, how to pay bills, and how to write a check.
  • My major take away was that now I know how to write a check.  I also know more about how people get paid by the government for medication (if they cannot afford it).  The government will help people who cannot afford to be healthy sometimes.
  • The worst part of this activity was my teacher ended this activity.  I also did not like how some people were making a joke out of this activity, mainly because it was fun and I learned a lot.

  • How did your character’s role/situation in the game affect your ability to take care of yourself?  Think about your income, job, rent, the amount of money you had, any loans you took out, and your health situation.  It was hard because the whole time I was in debt.  I was in debt because I had to pay my weekly expenses, which was about half the amount of money I got.  Rent, student loans, taxes, and utilities took a lot of my money. I did not have to pay many fines though.  If i had a big expense, I probably would not be able to afford it.

  • What aspects of your character’s life encouraged success?  What aspects of your character’s life brought about failure?  Explain how that process worked. I was not successful because I didn’t get paid a lot and when I got paid  I had to pay my rent and utilities and student loans and taxes so I only had a little bit of money left and I was in that $75. Even when applied for a second job  I didn’t get it, so I was left with the little money I had. Every week we would have our jobs, and then we would get paid on wednesdays and we would also have to pay our rent, student loans, taxes, and utilities every week.

  • What attempts did you make to improve your character’s life?  How successful were these attempts? How difficult were those attempts and why? I applied for a second job, the job was to be someone’s assistant, you had to water and take care of plants everyday. I didn’t get the job though because there were two other people applying so they got the jo instead of me. I had really bad luck during this economy unit because I didn’t get paid a lot, I had a bad job, and I didn’t get a job I wanted.

  • In bullet points, write a list of what you learned about poverty from this activity.  Be sure to include a brief description next to each item about what you learned, explaining your learning/thinking.

  • CEO is the head of a company
  • Rent we had to pay rent every week for our chair and table
  • Eviction people get evicted sometimes in the world.
  • Utilities we had to pay our utilities (light, electricity
  • Health care you have to pay for health care
  • Employment and firing you can get fired and you can get a job
  • Finances different payments you have to pay
  • Connections to israel

Second Attempt at Building a Racer

1. Given the challenge and the performance of your car on Test Drive #1, what change(s) did you make for Test Drive #2? We changed the wheels and we changed how the car is shaped and how we made is go. We combined 2 wheels.
2. What differences did you predict these changes would make in your cars performance? What makes you think this? I thought it would go farther because it was lighter and I thought the lighter it was the farther it goes.
3. Think about the variables such as the size of the spool, weight of the washer or tension of the rubber band. How might these affect how far or how fast your car will go? How big the washer was because the bigger it was the heaver it is.
4. What worked better the second time? It went farther and it was faster
5. What still is not quite working? The racer only went 22 inches because it was just a wheel with a rubber band inside.
6. What questions do I have? How can we make it go fast like a normal car with only 2 wheels.
7. What might I try next? I would make it like a real car with 4 wheels if I can.
8. Explain the energy transfer that is taking place in the racer. The elastic energy from the rubber band powers the car.

Blogging Job

On Monday we did cornell notes on Medicare, medicaid, whats going on with medicaid, and we were going to do researcher on departments. On tuesday and wednesday we had health instead of social studies because the teacher had meetings.

Racer Ideas and Plan

1. What do you like about your initial design? I like that it’s different and how the wheels look like a real cars wheels.

2. What has been challenging about the initial design? We did it in 5 minutes because our other one didn’t work so we had to figure out quickly how to power it with rubber bands.

3. How well did your racer perform in the first race? Did it go far? Fast? It only moved a few inches because it didn’t work.

4. How will you modify your design for the second race? What variables do you feel will affect how far and fast the racer goes? Why? I would make it more sturdy because it broke and I would change how we launch it because it broke when we launched it.

5. What have been your strengths and challenges during the design process? My partner and I agreed on a design and we work well together. Some challenges have been making sure it’s rubber band powered because we had a perfect design but we couldn’t rubber band power it.

6. What questions do you have? How can we make it move with a rubber band but make the wheels move? How can we make a racer with only 2 wheels.

Blogging Job

Today is the 10th of January,

Today we started off class by cleaning our lockers, then we left comments from international kids blog posts which was really cool because they made different masked about themselves. Today we are getting paid, I’m excited because we are getting paid but I am not because that means I have to pay my utilities, taxes, chair rent, table rent, student loan, and taxes.
