Newspaper Shoe Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only newspaper, 24 inches of tape, and one scissors, you and your partner need to create one shoe that fits either you or your partner’s foot. The shoe must be able to come on and off without falling apart.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Communication):

My goal for communication today within my team is…

To control my emotions so I don’t dictate the project.

My Individual Plan

I will measure the foot then I will use that measurement as the base of my foot. Since I am doing a sandal I will make a base for the heel to rest on. I will finish my shoe by putting a piece of paper over your feet but leaving the toes showing. Then I will tape the sandal together.

Why I think my plan will be successful:

My sister made this design and it held up to this day and she made it in June, so I am pretty confident.

Our Group’s Plan

We chose this plan because…

Our plans were very similar so we chose one (which was mine).

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

The shoe might fall apart during the process so that will be challenging.

Each partner will be responsible for…

Somebody will be the model so we can build the shoe and someone will build it.

After the Build

Our design worked well because…

We completed the shoe.

This activity was challenging because…

The shoe was not great.

This activity was comfortable because….

We did it.

I met my teamwork communication goal by…

letting my team member help a lot.

A strength of my partnership was….

We worked very well.

An area of growth for my partnership is…

We had different visions

For our next challenge, my new teamwork communication goal for myself is….

Have fun!

Sincerely,

What is a Herbivore, Carnivore, Consumer, and Producers?

  1. Herbivore:

An herbivore is a type of animal that only eats plants. A couple examples of herbivores are Hummingbirds and Geese. The geese eat grass and the hummingbirds eat pollen.

2.Carnivore

A carnivore is an animal that the eats meat such as tigers and lions.  Tigers eat all sorts of meat like buffaloes and pigs. Lions eat antelopes and giraffes. The carnivores eat meat because they can get their nutrients from the meat that the carnivores eat.

3.Consumer

Consumers are animals that eat other animals to survive. A couple of examples of consumers are frogs and spiders. Frogs eat flys and other insects. Spiders eat most animals that are trapped in their web.

4.Producers

Producers are animals that produce their own food. A couple of examples of producers are apple trees and palm trees. Palm trees make coconuts. Producers get their food by getting nutrients from the air, water and soil. They trap light energy from the sun to help them to make their own food.

End of NA Unit Reflection

How do you think you have grown as a learner since the beginning of this unit?

At the beginning of this unit I knew very basic information about Native Americans. Now I feel I have explored deeper into Native Americans.

What topic this unit has been most interesting to you? Explain.

The sports mascot part. I learned why the Native Americans wanted to change the sports teams name.

Think about our school values.

  • What has this unit made you wonder? Why do we torture Native Americans?
  • How has this unit made you feel empathy? I feel so bad for the Native Americans.
  • How has this unit strengthened your feeling of Tikkun Olam? I really want to help the Native Americans.

What can we (your teachers) change to make this unit better in the future?

I don’t know, this was a awesome unit!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

msteigmann

Reflecting on ETC

How have you changed as a group member this year in ETC?

I learned the importance of working in a group with people you might not want to work with all the time. I now know that this kind of teamwork will occur a lot of times in your life and things will not go your way all the time.

How has working in ETC made you a better student in other classes? (Social Studies, ELA, Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Math, Science)

I have been more open minded to whom I am working with in groups and had more of a positive and growth mindset.

Thinking about my blog posts, I have improved by….

Adding a lot more information and detail.

In the future, I plan to improve my blog posts by….

Instead of doing sentences I will write paragraphs of information.

Sincerely,

msteigmann

Native American Experience

Some Native Americans do not like the term Native American. Explain why they reject this name.

The names are making stereotypes about the Native Americans

One person in the BBC Video said that living in poverty does not mean they are poor. What do you think he meant by that?

That they try to make the best out of their lives

Some Native Americans approve of the team name Redskins. What is their reason for approving this name while others do not?

The name is making the Native Americans more popular

In the CNN segment, there was a story told about a woman who used to approve of the name Redskins, and now does not. What changed? Why does she no longer approve of the name?

Because they are probably adding things to the name Redskin

How can non-Native people help others learn about Native Americans current issues? What can we do to help?

We can raise money for the Native Americans

msteigmann

Cup Holder Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials ( 6 straws, 1 piece of paper, a piece of tinfoil, 12 inches of masking tape, 2 paperclips, 2 pieces of string, 1 envelope, and 2 pipe cleaners)  create a structure that holds two cups as high as possible and as far apart as possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for participation today while working in my group is…

To have my voice heard in the project so I can own the project too.

My Individual Plan

I will use the straws and pipe cleaners as my base the the paper and tape them to the paper and the ground. Then I will use the tinfoil to mold a cup holder. Then I will attach the paper clips to the side of the structure and use them to secure the cups in place. I will take the string and stretch it and tape in to put tension to keep it up stronger.

Why I think my plan will be successful:

Because it will be sturdy but tall and wide.

My Groups Plan

We chose this plan because…

It is a combination of everybody’s idea

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

Balance

Each group member will be responsible for…

building,documenting, and planning

After the Build

Our design worked well because…

it was 22″

This activity was challenging because…

you had to build it out of  limited material

This activity was comfortable because….

we did it

I met my participation goal by…

helping a lot

A strength of my team was….

we were really fast

An area of growth for my team is…

inclusion

For our next challenge, my new participation goal for myself is….

relax

Plant Observations in Organic and Inorganic Material

Throughout our science unit we have been focusing on organic and inorganic material. As an experiment, we decided to compare the growth of a bean seed in organic material vs inorganic material. We developed hypotheses and predicted what type of material our bean seeds would grow best in. Over the past three weeks we have observed our bean seeds once or twice a week to see how they are changing and growing. Below are my observations I noticed today.

Here is a picture of my bean seed growing in organic material:

Here is a picture of my bean seed growing in inorganic material:

My observations about my bean plant that is growing in organic material are……

That it is very tall and healthy

My observations about my bean plant that is growing in inorganic material are…..

That is medium height and a brown-ish-green color which is not healthy

Conclusion: I think the plants grew better in organic material because of these reasons:

The soil has more nutrients than the perlite

Native American Mascots

I think that the mascots should be changed because they are insulting Native Americans. Also a lot of Native Americans are trying to sue the teams but the teams still refuse to change their name.

I wonder why the teams will not change their names? It could be that their team names are  and they don’t want to change the names. Or they could have signed an agreement with the Native Americans and do not want to change the agreement.

What do you think?

Sincerely,

msteigmann

Paper Chain Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials (two pieces of construction paper, 1 pair of scissors, 1 ruler and one 12-inch strip of masking tape) create the longest paper chain possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for teamwork today is…

Not to  dictate the project

My Individual Plan

My plan is to cut the paper in strips and then tape them together. We could also use the ruler.

Why I think my plan will be successful:

I think it will be successful because the chain will be at max. length.

My Groups Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out plan>

We chose this plan because…

Possible challenges that may come up during construction…

Each group member will be responsible for…

Solving Word Problems with Fractions

Today in math we continued to work on solving word problems with fractions. When solving word problems we need to draw a visual to represent the problem, write an equation(s) with a variable to represent the unknown amount, show our work, and write the answer with a label. Shown below is what this looks like based on the following word problem:

“Rex is making bread. He combines 1 3/4 cups of white flour and 2 1/3 cups of wheat flour. He adds rye flour to make a total of 5 cups. How much rye flour does he add?”

1) Here is a picture of my visual:

2) Here is a picture of my equation(s) with a variable to represent the unknown amount:

3) Here is a picture of the work I did to solve the problem:

4) My answer and label is…

11/12 cup  of rye

5) Why does drawing a visual help when solving a word problem?
So  you can see how you solved the problem. Also if someone does not get the problem they can see it.

6) How are you feeling about solving word problems with fractions? Is there anything that you still need help with or need to work on further? I feel great because I can solve the problems.

7) We have our Unit 1 test this Friday. Is there anything that you do not understand or want more help with? No there is nothing I need help with.

8) What will you do throughout this week so you are prepared for the test this Friday? Do more word problems so I can improve.

 Sincerely,
msteigmann
