Week #3 Student Blogging Challenge

Task #1: Educate Others

For our Student Blogging Challenge this week we learned about plagiarism and how most images you find on google are illegal to use. This is because you are using someone else’s work and calling it your own.

Task #2: Make an Image

Our next task is to make our own photo for our blog. For mine I used https://pablo.buffer.com/. I used a photo that I took and made sure to give credit to the person who said the quote.

Task #3: Picture Prompts

Finally we have to write a story for a picture. Then you the reader will have to finish the story based on the picture.

This is a picture of my friend Hanna. She is one of my good friends. One cold night in the middle of October a few friends decided to have a secrete meeting in the depths of a basement. They had been up for our hours planning a secret mission to be done the next day. They were on their fifth round of coffee when Hanna started to act crazy. The coffee must have gotten to her. No one know were they were our what they were doing…..

Can you figure it out?

Project Soapbox

My Soapbox speech topic I am interested in, is women’s opportunities in sports and the pay difference between men and women.
I am really interested in this topic because I play sports and I am really interested in why there is a difference.

I could really use some help with getting more information about this topic.

Dear President Roosevelt

Dear President Roosevelt,

Five days ago, on May 14, 1939. 937 people boarded the St. Louis. Of those people were my cousin and her father. They had spent many months trying to get the special visa they needed to come on the journey. They had left there old life behind to start over.

They arrived in Cuba two days ago. They had been promised the right to enter Cuba. But when they got there they weren’t allowed off the boat. They stayed on the boat for many hours. In hope of being able to get off.

I am writing this letter because I think it is unfair that the US won’t accept these people. They gave up so much and spent so much time and effort to get here and now they are here and they aren’t allowed in.

Many people over the last few days have demanded that the government let them in. But you are not listening. I think it is disgusting that you are not letting these people in because they are Jewish.

Jews have a lot of power in this country and we are going to speak up. We want our voices to be heard. I WANT these Jews to be let in. I want my voice to be heard.

Sincerely,

Sarah Cohen

Capstone Interview Reflection

1. Who did you interview?

I interviewed my mom for my capstone interviewed.

2. What is one new thing you learned from this process?

I learned more about interviewing people and the skills needed to get the most information, while also summarizing to be able to get to all the questions.

3. Is there anything that surprised you about your interview?

Nothing really surprised me. My family has always talked about their opinions on certain matters and have always talked to me about the choices they make for me. So all the answers my mom gave were things she has already told me.

4. Did your interview(s) change you in any way? How so?

This interview didn’t change my mind in the terms of the answers of the questions but it did help me understand that sometimes it’s not easy to find the information I need. I think something for me to be able to get more information is  to find a different family member that I’m not so close to and have a conversation with them and get another perspective.

How Hitler Marginalized Minorities

Marginalized means being pushed to the outside. It also means being pushed to the edge of society. Individual people and groups of people can be marginalized. It can cause people to be treated very poorly and not fell wanted in society.

We are learning about the time after World War One and before the Holocaust. During this time Jews became marginalized within a very short time period. First any Jews in Germans government were taken out of office. Then they started to arrest Jews, shut down their businesses and parade the streets saying how bad Jews were. This made it to the news and other countries around Europe found out. They decided to boycott by not buying German goods. Hitler used this as an excuse to keep doing what he was doing. This all happened within a few months. Because of all these things Jews became marginalized. They no longer were apart of Germans society. They had no power in the government and no rights/freedoms.  They no longer could stand up for themselves and fight back.

Concept Map

I made the decision to begin my concept with Why We Learn History because everything comes from who we are and our identity. You can get an idea of your identity from your ancestors and the events that happen before you. I then built off of it by using connecting words to show how everything is related.

The concept map helped me as a Jew because it showed me how I can find my identity. It taught me how different things play into our Jewish identity. Like single stories, making groups, stereotypes and universe of obligation. These are only a few aspects that play into my Jewish identity.

Soap Boat Challenge

The first thing me and MK did was watch the video many times to see exactly what we needed to do. Then we decided not to start cutting and testing right away, we first made a T tart of ideas and what the outcomes were. After that we started making our boats and testing. Below is what we found out each day of our project:

Day 1: We made our T tart and generated ideas. We found that the best option was Styrofoam plates which is what they used in the video. We also wrote down different factors which would come into play when we started. Some examples were; the shape and size of the boat, the size of the key hole, the amount of soap and the type of soap.

Day 2: We started to build and test boats. This day was mostly just trying to figure out the shape. We found that the medium sized house shaped boats with a medium key hole worked the best. We also realized that on our first poster we had no where to document the distance the boats went. So we made a new poster with our new boats and how far they went.

Day 3: At the beginning of class everyone said what worked and didn’t work. And everyone came to the conclusion that the boats would not go if there was soap in the water. So we built new boats and we made the key hole with a hole puncher so the hole would be perfect and always the same with every boat which I think was one of our problems the day before. We decided on two different boats, one is a medium house shaped boat with a small key hole and the other a small triangle with a small key hole. They both went 30cm at about the same speed.

Day 4: We decided on our final boats and tested a few more times.

Day 5: We did the competition against all the other teams. We used or triangle shape book. It went 105cm. I think we could’ve done better if we could do some more test and research.

This is our first poster we made on the first day.

This is our second poster we made on the third day to document the distance of our boats.
This is our first boat. It is a medium house shape with a small key hole. It went 30cm.

This is our second boat it is a small triangle with a small key hole. It went 31cm
