Greek Gods and Goddesses

We’ve spent the past week researching a slew of Greek Gods and Goddesses. Tomorrow we will watch Percy Jackson to enhance our learning in a fun and engaging way. Students will document mentioned Gods and their traits. The movie is rated PG. Here is a website detailing the content of the film. If you have any objection to your child watching the film, please let me know.

Publishing Party with Second Grade

Today we celebrated publishing another piece of writing with second grade. We shared our memoirs and they shared their fairy tales and fables. It was a lot of fun and yummy…Gev. Dowling surprised us with a treat! Writing will come home after Pesach as we will continue to share with our peers throughout the week.

After break we will begin working on biographies and studying non-fiction text!

Passover Rube Goldberg…success!

After working for several weeks, we are close to completing our Passover Rube Goldberg projects. There were cheers of happiness as groups found success after weeks of building, failing, building, failing, building and failing! Talk about a valuable lesson in growth mindset and perseverance! I won’t share too much as I hope your child will share more with you! Please ask them about their work!

JUNIOR DOCENT TOMORROW!

Your children have worked diligently on their art replicas and have prepared wonderful reports and creative writing pieces inspired by their artwork. They can’t wait to share them with you!

The program will begin promptly at 3:30 at the Milwaukee Art Museum and should end no later than 5.

Your child should come to school tomorrow with his/her presentation outfit on a hanger. We will change before leaving school at 2:45.

In the past, some families have gone out together to celebrate afterward. Your children have prepared for this special evening for the last 3 years; it is an ice cream worthy kind of night! 🙂

Please contact myself or Gev. Porat with any questions.

See you tomorrow!

Ancient Greece

We have started our transition from ancient Egypt to Ancient Greece. Today we watched a short video highlighting some of the main ideas we will study throughout this unit. Before the video I asked the kids to generate a list of ideas they already knew about ancient Greece. We will refer back to this sheet throughout the unit just in case some of what we thought was true actually isn’t! While we watched, the kids documented gained knowledge as well as wonders that popped up while they got a very brief introduction to Greece.

Check out our new driving question board filled with all of our wonders. It is these wonders that will guide our entire unit along! Please ask your child what he/she is wondering about Greece so far!

Junior Docent Program- March 20- 3:30PM

Whoa, how did this sneak up on us? I am SO excited for you to join us at the Milwaukee Art Museum on Tuesday, March 20. The students have been working hard on their paintings and sculptures and have started working on their presentations. This program is always a highlight of the year in 5th grade.

The program will begin at 3:30PM and should end around 5:00PM. As I told the kiddos today, many families often celebrate afterward with an ice cream or dinner together- so fun!

The students, Gev. Porat and I will take a bus from school and meet you at the museum. If you would like siblings to take the bus with us, that is fine too. A form will be sent home later this week. Students are expected to bring a change of clothing to school on this day as we “dress to impress” for our presentations.  I will share this information with your children as the date gets closer and send a reminder that week.

Because we will be working hard on presentations, there is no home reading log this week due to a possible increase in homework as we prepare.

If you have any questions, please contact either myself or Gev. Porat.

Examining Plot Structure

This week in Reader’s Workshop we examined plot structure and worked on identifying different elements of plot.

We started the week by diagramming together, using our mentor text The Can Man. Later, students worked in partnerships to examine plot further. Please see student posts for more detail and information.

Today, in honor of Dr.Seuss’s Birthday, we watched The Sneetches and did plot diagramming together.

Next week we will continue our study of fiction by examining different themes commonly found in fictional text.
