Cornell Notes

Did you use the websites provided to you for this activity? Did they help? Explain.

I used some of them and they did help me by giving me hard information.

How do you think you can use your Cornell notes in the future?

I can use them to help me research other things.

What are 3 new things you learned from researching the colonies in this way? (This one you can just bullet point if you’d like)

I learned how to research better, I learned how to research with the questions, I learned about more about the colonies.

Why did we do this activity?

We did this to get better at researching.

How did you research for this activity?

I looked up the questions.

What were the biggest challenges you encountered during this activity?

I thought I couldn’t find the information.

How did you overcome your challenges?

I got help from Gev. Noorlander

Building an insulator

This week in science, we worked in teams to create a water bottle insulator that kept the water inside the bottle the coldest for the longest amount of time. First, we planned what we would need, how we would build it, and sketched our first design. Next, we tested our design to see how well our insulator worked. Below you will see the results and how we will improve our first insulator to make it even better!

An insulator is…

An insulator is energy that slows heat transfers

Here is a picture of our original design:

The materials we used were…

We used a water bottle, tin foil, wire, hot glue, fabric, and pipe cleaner

Results! What was the temperature of your water to begin with? After 15 minutes? After 35 minutes?

Started temperature: 50 degrees F, Temperature after 15 minutes  54 degrees F after 35 minutes 62 deegrees F

Time Temperature (in Fahrenheit)
0 minutes 50
After 15 minutes 54
After 35 minutes 62

The engineering process includes thinking about how to make your design better and re-building your product. The improvements that we will make to our insulator are…

We will take off the handle and plastic wrap and add more tinfoil and cover it in

These changes will improve my insulator because…

The polyurethane is a good insulator.

New results:

Time Temperature (in Fahrenheit)
0 minutes  43 degrees
After 15 minutes  45 degrees
After 35 minutes  58 degrees

Here is the word problem my partner and I solved:

Yoshi has a rope 30 feet long. He must cut it into pieces that are each ¼ foot long. Will he get more or fewer than 30 pieces? How do you know? How many pieces will Yoshi get?

Here is a picture of my visual that represents the problem:

Here is my equation(s) with a variable to represent the unknown amount:

1/4 x 4 = 4 x 30 = 120 pieces.

When predicting my answer, I know my answer will be smaller or larger because…

It will be larger because when you are cutting something it is making more pieces which means more.

Here is a picture of the work I did to solve the problem:

My answer and label are…

120 pieces.

Testing our Rapunzel Creations

What materials did you choose for your build and why?

My group chose paper. At first, we tried 3D printing but the machine broke so we chose paper.

While you test:

What are you noticing?

I am noticing that our structure needs help standing up. It really isn’t working so we need to improve it.

What things are working?

The structure is ok but it needs to be improved a lot. It also needs a sturdy base

What things are not working?

The tower isn’t standing on its own and the “rope” isn’t working.

How will you tweak this? Make this better? (Be specific and detailed!)

I think my group will try to find better materials for a structure and try to improve the “rope”.

Do you need any new materials? If so, WHY?

My group does need new materials because the paper isn’t working.

Sketch your new design with labels on a piece of paper. Make sure your drawing is detailed and specifically labeled.

Insert your sketch here:

Why will this new design work better than your first attempt? What is your evidence?

I think it will because it has a better structure and base for support so it should work.

One Word Goal – 2019

REFRESH

לְרַעֲנֵן

I chose refresh because at the beginning of the week I tend to be stressed or anxious. So for me if I refresh before the new week begins I restart and begin a new week without stress. In my case being stressed makes me struggle with paying attention and it makes me very energetic and I feel the need to move around. So if I refresh and start new again I will be much calmer and more relaxed.
