Rube Goldberg Passover Challenge

Today’s goal: By the end of class today my group will have designed the last step of our Rube Goldberg.

What went well today?

Everything. We completed the goal successfully.

What was challenging?

When we were done with our last step we needed to figure out a way to tip the food coloring upside down. We figured that out, too.

What steps went into deciding your final design?

Thinking of materials and lots of brainstorming and tinkering.

How many attempts did you try before finding success? If you did not find success, what do you think you need to try on Monday?

We got it on the 1st attempt.

What are the next steps for your group?

Build the rest of our Rube Goldberg.

Are there any additional materials your group needs to gather?

Oh, yes a lot. We have 1 group member bringing in Matchbox cars and I personally need to bring in a marble track. Someone in our group also needs to get red food coloring. We still need to get a bunch of tables because most of our Rube Goldberg is in the air.

Elements of Plot

What book are you currently reading?

Steelheart

Why did you choose this book?

ygaines recommended it.

Thinking about your book, who were the main characters?

David and his group.

What smaller problems happened in the book?

A bunch of people died.

Have you reached the climax of your book? What was the big moment of tension?

I’m not sure yet.

Have you reached the resolution? If yes, is it what you thought would happen? If not, how do you think the problem will be resolved?

I think the problem will be resolved by them killing steelheart.

What type of conflict occurs in your book?

Character vs Character.

Passover Rube Goldberg

My Seder Plate/Table item: Charoset

My Plague: Blood

Today my group worked on planning our Rube Goldberg. Our ideas include putting a matchbox car down a bunch of toilet paper tubes, rolling a marble down a marble track, using a sphero to knock down the marble.

The part of this assignment that I think will be most challenging is finding a way to tip the food coloring into the water because it’s really hard to come up with something that could do that.

I read through the rubric and here are my questions N/A

Next steps for my group include finishing our planning and starting to build.

Rubber Band Boat Day 4

Today was the 4th day of our rubber band boat. If you’re confused about where day 3 is, the reason I didn’t do a post was because day 3 was for finishing up our boats and my boat was already finished. Today we tested our boat and it worked. But we had already tested it before so we knew it worked.

Conflict in Fiction Tutorial

Think about a book you’re reading now or one you’ve read recently. What type of conflict occurred in the story? Describe it using specific details from the text.

My book is the first Harry Potter book (SPOILERS AHEAD!). The conflict was that there was an artifact called the sorcerers (not philosophers!) stone. Voldemort was trying to steal it.

How did it move the rest of the story along?

It gave the story a plotline. It gave Harry and his friends a role in the story where they needed to find out what was the artifact.

Was the conflict resolved? How? If not, how do you think it will be resolved?

The conflict was resolved. Harry stopped Voldemort from taking the stone and then the stone was destroyed.

Rubber Band Boat Day 2

Today we started building the boat. As you can see, we didn’t have much space to test it out. In the little space we had, the boat worked very well. Everything worked as it should. No major setbacks in the building. I’m not gonna bore you with all the details of the building. All you really need to know is that the boat worked and we’ll hopefully be getting a  bigger tub tomorrow.

Rubber Band Boat Day 1

Today in science ygaines and I started making a rubber band boat. Other groups did different boats but we chose the rubber band one. There were 3 options. The rubber band boat, the balloon boat, and the secret potion boat. We are going to be working on this project for the next few days. If you want more details go to ygaines21’s blog.

Memoir Update

We’ve been working on writing memoirs in ELA for the past few weeks. Here is an update on what I’ve accomplished/learned at each stage of the writing process.

The part of the writing process that has been the most comfortable for me has always been…because…

The part of the writing process that has been the most comfortable for me has always been the drafting stage because once I have an idea I pretty much know exactly what I’m going to write even before I start.

The part of the writing process that has been the most challenging for me has always been….because…

The part of the writing process that has been the most challenging for me has always been Generating Ideas because I’m not very good at coming up with things that actually happened in my life that I’m willing to write about.

Immersion

I’ve learned the characteristics of a memoir include:

-A true story or narrative that often focuses on a memorable experience of particular time in the author’s life.

-Written in chronological order so events unfold naturally.

-Includes descriptive details, dialogue, and pacing to develop experiences.

-Often includes a reflection on why the event is important to the writer.

-The writer is in the story. He or she tells the story from his or her point of view.

-Many memoirs include the writer’s family or friends or someone who made a difference in his/her life.

-Memoirs are written to make the reader feel something: happy, sad, mad, etc.

I think the characteristic I really want to focus on in my writing is…because…

I think the characteristic I really want to focus on in my writing is using descriptive details because I want the reader to be able to visualize it.

My favorite memoir mentor text was….because the author…

I didn’t like any of the mentor texts because most of them were kinda boring and none of them had anything I was interested in.

Generating Ideas/Selecting

Why do you want to share this idea/story with others?

Deductive Reasoning. There was nothing else that I’d be willing to write about.

What emotions do you want your reader to feel as they read your memoir?

My memoir is not meant to make the reader feel an emotion.

Drafting

Here is my first draft:

One thing I think I did really well is….because…

One thing I think I did really well is use descriptive details because Gev. Kimmel said I use good descriptive details.

As I head into editing and revising, one thing I want to focus on is…because…

As I head into editing and revising, one thing I want to focus on is using good SHE feedback when helping others because I want to be aware of other people’s feelings.

Stay tuned for another post soon as I work on revising my first draft. If you have any SHE (specific, helpful, empathetic) feedback, please leave it as a comment!

10 by 100

So today in class we were told to make a list of 10 things we would like to accomplish by the time we’re 100.

  1. Get married
  2. Have babies (I’m not sure how many yet)
  3. Travel to all 50 states
  4. Travel to all 7 continents
  5. Become a Grandpa
  6. Become a Great-Grandpa
  7. Exceed the height of 5 foot 5
  8. Go to a good college and graduate
  9. Get a good job
  10. Don’t die

Below is a guess of what I might look like when I’m 100. Brace yourselves (I put it really far down so you aren’t forced to look at it).

Initial Ideas for Passover Challenge

Every year around this time the Technion invites a bunch of high schoolers to do a Rube Goldberg of the 10 plagues. Our ETC class is doing our own 10 plagues Rube Goldberg. We are splitting up into 10 groups. Each group does their own plague and at the end, we will connect them all to make one huge Rube Goldberg. Here are my top 3 choices for what plague I want to do.

  1. Death of First Born
  2. Blood
  3. Frogs

Below are some cool Rube Goldergs related to this project.
