Basketball Unit Reflection

Now that our basketball unit is finished it is time for us to reflect on our growth during the unit.  Please answer the following questions by replying to this post on my blog.  Make sure to use complete sentences, capitalization, and correct punctuation.  Your answers for questions 1 and 3 must be two to three complete sentences not just one sentence. For question 2 your answer can be one sentence but it should still be a complete sentence.  I am looking to see some depth and thinking in your answers.

  1. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
  2. Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
  3. At the end of the football unit you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?

  1. Model of a reflection that meets grade level Expectations:
    1. When the basketball unit started I wanted to work on my ball handling skills. I can only dribble well with my right hand and when I try to dribble with my left I can’t control the ball very well. I think my dribbling improved because during scrimmages I was able to control the ball with both hands and get by people more easily. I improved because of all the dribbling drills Adon Brugman made us do.

    2. One way I demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit was during the shooting drills I made sure all of my teammates had a chance to shoot and I cheered them on.

    3. I think I still need to work on paying attention to Adon Brugman when he is giving instructions or explaining something. I am still talking with my friends and then sometimes I don’t know what is going on. By paying more attention I won’t be confused by some of the drills or games we play in gym class.

    • 1. One skill I wanted to work on was shooting. Another skill I wanted to work on was being able to keep the ball when dribbling. I think that I improved on both because during our last drill I made a free throw and a three-pointer. I also think that I improved on being able to keep the ball because when I asked to bring the ball up I was able to keep it.

      2. One way I demonstrated good sportsmanship was during the scrimmages when our team lost or didn’t make a basket I still cheered them on.

      3. I think that I can keep doing my goal from the last unit which was to be more involved in the game we are playing. I am still in the background and I don’t really get involved in many of the plays and that is one thing that I want to work on.

    • 1. I wanted to work on my shooting and ball control. I think that I got better at both of those because the warm up drills made me actually get better and the shooting drill helped my jump shot. I also wanted to get better at my fastbreak defense and throughout the games I got better at that and got back on more fastbreaks.

      2. I demonstrated good sportsmanship by not getting mad if my teammates missed a bad shot or played bad defense. I also made sure that I complimented my teammates whenever they made a shot or played good defense.

      3. I got better at my left hand dribbling because of the dribbling drills. I also got better at fastbreak defense. I also worked on my free-throws and got easier to shoot instead of passing every time because at the beginning, even if I had an open shot, I would pass it.

  2. 1.) I wanted to work on passing to everyone on the court. I feel I improved on that skill because I involved everyone and made sure everyone felt included. I also wanted to work on seeing the court better. I felt like I did that really well because our team found a lot of holes in that defense and since we could see that court, we scored a lot of points.
2.) One way I demonstrated good sportsmanship was when my teammate missed or made a shot I always encouraged them on even if we were losing or they felt discouraged.
3.) Last Quarter I wanted to not get so competitive. This Quarter I feel like I was able to relax and enjoy the game more. I now want to work on letting other people lead meaning they could take the ball up and run the offense because I can already run the offense in gym.

  3. 1. One skill I wanted to get better on in basketball is dribbling because I can dribble but I can’t control the ball. And passing more. 2. One way I demonstrated good sportsmanship is when I have open shot but someone else has a better open shot I pass the ball. 3. One thing I want to work is passing and not being afraid to draw a foul and call fouls when they happen to me.

  4. I want to work on a free throw. Yes I do fell that I worked on it I can make 5/10 now and before I could not throw one at all. I did good teamwork because sometimes I would pass to people when I get the ball. I feel I should keep working on basketball because if I don’t I will forget every thing that I learned. Now I should keep practicing my throwing and free throws.

  5. I wanted to work on dribbling with my left hand. I think that I got better because I could do it without losing the ball. one time I had good sportsmanship was in the relay race Eva lost the ball but I seed keep going! I now wont to work on shooting mid-range shots.

  6. One to two basketball skills that I wanted to work on was dribbling with my right hand because I wanted to work on being fluent in both of my hands. Another skill that I wanted to work on was passing the ball because when I will play I need to pass beter than I was. I think that I did improve because now I think that I am pretty fluent with my dribbling same for passing. I think this because people actually gave me the ball so I could practice passing and dribbling. One time that I demonstrated good sportsmanship was when I let someone who wasn’t that good at basketball get a turn dribbling and passing and by the end of our unit I think that they got much better. I think that one thing that is new that I want to be better at is shooting three’s. It is going to help me by now I can dribble then easily shoot the three because people probably think that I won’t be able to shoot the three so then I will make the shot.

  7. #1. One skill that I planned to improve on is my driving and dribbling to the hoop. I think that I have somewhat improved this skill because during the games that I played in I was able to drive to the hoop and make the easy shot.
#2. I think that during the basketball unit when a person on my team scored I would always give them a hi-five and tell them “nice shot!”
#3. I think that I can because of the skill that I picked up was passing to other people on the team. I think that I have done that currently during the basketball unit and I think that I will do this in other units in gym.

  8. At the beginning of the unit, I wanted to improve on my offense. At the beginning of every practice, we did a dribbling drill. This really helped me work on not holding the ball and which hands to use when dibbling. I definitely think I got better at dribbling.
I demonstrated good sportsmanship by always passing to my teammates and making sure that everyone got the ball. I think that I got better at catching but basketball did not really help with catching a football.

  9. 1. I wanted to be able to play basketball even though I had Plantar Fasciitis. That I improved a lot because now I can almost play like as if I don’t have Plantar Fasciitis and it doesn’t even hurt.
    2. A lot of the people on my team were injured except for the people who didn’t really like basketball. So when we were playing I set picks for them and always made sure that they made a shot.
    3. I think that I have been doing a lot better with my goal. I also feel like maybe it’s time for a new goal which I think would be about teamwork we are about to do soccer, maybe I even though I usually don’t I could try to help people.

  10. 1. I want to work on asking and getting the ball. I never get it when we are scrimmaging. For the last scrimmage, I only got the ball twice.
    2. One time I showed sportsmanship is that I always try to say good job when the other team or my team gets the ball in the hoop.

    3. I think I still need to work on shooting the ball into the hoop

  11. 1. One skill I wanted to get better at is not being afraid to make contact. At the beginning of the unit, I only passed to my friends and took longer shots to stay away from people. Now at the end of the unit, I am trying to dive and dish because it will most likely be a better shot.
    2. One way I showed good sportsmanship was I got better at passing to others and not getting upset about other players
    3. Something that I am doing a good job in gym is not thinking it the Olympics and reminding myself it is just a game in gym. This helps by making me not get so competitive.

  12. In the basketball unit I showed good sportsmanship when we were scrimmaging I passed the ball a lot to my team mates and worked together.

In the beginning of the basketball unit I wanted to work on shooting and passing. I got really good at basketball mostly passing and shooting and I thought this was a great unit.

One thing I still have to work on is to stop arguing with my team and paying attention. I sometimes don’t listen to my teammates and instead I yell at them.

  13. 1. I wanted to improve my dedication because I usually hand over and the other hand doesn’t catch on. After all the training I went through for dedication I think I got better.
2.I once encouraged a player who kept him from shooting or scoring, and that he threw is a lamb 🙂
3.I think I should practice injections. Many times I miss a shot that I have pressure, though usually without pressure I can score without a problem. I try to practice exercises that will leave me alone in front of the basket because I usually miss myself.

  14. 1. When we started Basketball I wanted to improve n driving in an open lane and not going for far shots. Now, at the end of the unit, I accomplished not going for far shots and to drive instead of an open lane for a free throw.
    2. I want to continue to work on driving and taking layups and a wide-open free-throw line extended shots. I want to continue to pass the ball to people that don’t participate as much to try to make them better so they are confident in themselves.
    3. I want to work on not arguing with the ref so I don’t have to take a break on the sideline. I want to accomplish this by like a 1/4 into the 3rd quarter.

  15. When the basket ball unit started, I wanted to work dribbling with both hands. I think I got better and better each at dribbling with both hands when we did the dribbling drills. I think my dribbling improved because my friends cheered my on and that made me improve better. I think when we played half court games. One way I showed good sportsmanship is by passing the ball to all the people on my team so they would get a chance to shoot. I think I still need to work on shooting more when we are playing games and dribbling with the ball while I’m running. I think I will get better at doing these things by playing basketball at home with my brother more often, and I think try a little bit harder so I can get better at basketball.

  16. 1. I wanted to continue to work on spreading the ball around. I definitely did not improve on this mainly because all of our games were a joke. The entire time was spent either goofing off and shooting half-court shots or tackling players without calling fouls. It was a fun unit.
    2. I demonstrated good sportsmanship when I didn’t care about the score and just tried to have fun during the games.
    3. I forgot what my goal from last time was but my new goal should be putting everyone else in front of myself and trying to make sure EVERYONE has a good time and not just me.

  17. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
    1. I think I got better at dribbling down the court. I did this by getting a lot of turnovers and running to the other hoop as fast as I could while trying to dribble.
Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
    2. I showed good sportsmanship by telling people that they did a good job when they tried to shoot a hoop because its the effort that matters.
At the end of the football unit you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?
    3. I need to work on stamina because I commonly ran out of breath while running down the court which ended me up just walked sometimes which is not good.

  18. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
I wanted to understand the game completely and I wanted to learn how to make better baskets. I feel I learned how to play basketball better, but I think I didn’t learn how to make better baskets.

Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
I complimented the other team and cheered for them when they got a basket.

At the end of the football unit, you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?
I will continue being a good sport and I will work harder and participate even more.

  19. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?

I wanted to work on my ball handling and my 3 point shooting. I Think my ball handling got a little better, but my shooting drastically improved.

Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.

I think I showed good sportsmanship when a player fell onto the ground and I helped him back up.

At the end of the football unit you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?

In the football unit I wanted to pass as much as I could. I think that I passed a lot more than I shot. In the soccer unit I want to allow 0 goals while playing goalie.

  20. 1. When the unit started, I really wanted to work on dribbling. I think throughout the unit I got more confident and better at my dribbling skills and handling the ball.
    2. One example of showing good sportsmanship was encouraging others and being a good sport when we lose or I didn’t have my best game.
    3. I think I am getting better at the warm up. I think I can still do better at staying concentrated on what I am doing and making sure I do them to my full ability.

  21. 1. I wanted to work on passing which I didn’t get much better. I also wanted to work on shooting which I improved on and got more passes for I got better with shots.
    2. I can demonstrate good sportsmanship by passing and giving advice to all.
    3. I can pay attention and always know what to do if I don’t I can get help.

  22. 1. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is? I wanted to be able to drive on people, even when there are a lot of people in my way. I think I got better at this, but I think I still need to keep working on it.
    2. Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit. When I said good game to my team, and the other team.
    3. At the end of the football unit you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE? I think that I need to work on doing it when I’m mad.

  23. When I started the basketball unit I wanted to work on all my skills and my dribbling. I wanted to work on dribbling because I usually lose the ball when I try to evade defenders. I wanted to work on all my other skills because my shot is bad and my driving can’t get through defenders.

I didn’t demonstrate good sportsmanship. I think this happened because I was in the game too long because of the lack of people in our class which means no subs.

I need to work on my sportsmanship. I need to be able to know when I am going to explode in rage. I think I need less playing time.

  24. 1. When the unit started I really wanted to get better at shooting, free throws and lay ups. I wanted to get better so during girls basketball games I would be able to score more than I did last year and help my team win games. I think I got better at shooting. I now make more of my free throws, not a l lot of them but more than last year. Last year I hated using the back board so none of my lay ups went in and this year I go slower and aim so way more of them go in.
    2. I demonstrated good sportsmanship when I said good try after a teammate missed a shot or catch. I know its hard sometimes and everyone misses and I don’t want to make them feel bad about a missed shot in middle school PE. I know I miss a lot of my shots too.
    3. I wanted to get better at trying harder in co-ed games. I used to get really discouraged at co-ed games because I knew I wouldn’t get passed to. Now I realized it wasn’t worth it. This will help in PE because I will play more instead of just not trying because I know the boys won’t pass to me. Maybe they will.

  25. 1.I wanted to work on dribbling and passing. I worked on this a little with the drills and in game. I improved only a little because of the drills.
2.When some of my teamates didn’t make shots I just said it’s okay, and we continued with the game.
3.I do think I need to work on my sportsmanship to the other team because sometimes I get heated and I yell and scream and get angry.

  26. 1. I wanted to improve on making shots in the basket and work on looking up when I dribble because it was hard to look up when I dribble because I don’t want to lose control of the ball.
    2. I demonstrated good sportsmanship when I pasted people the ball and said good job to my teammates and the other teammates.
    3. I want to work on the same goals because I feel like I could still improve in making sure I listen because some times I wouldn’t listen and I wouldn’t know what was going on. I also need to improve on make sure if I get frustrated to get a drink of water and take a breath.

  27. 1. Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?

My goal was to at least shoot the ball in the basket once. Long story short did not make a single basket but did get hit in the head with the ball almost every game.

    2. Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.

One way I demonstrated good sportsmanship by at least participating a little bit.

    3. At the end of the football unit, you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?

My goal was to participate more. At least I did a little bit….

  28. 1)When I started the basketball unit, the only thing I wanted to do was survive the sport of tall people. I didn’t survive the sport of tall people because I am short and not very athletic. I was just running around and flailing my arms and one of the three times I got the ball I hit my best friend in the head with it. (sorry mm)
    2) I showed sportsmanship by letting people have the ball instead of me (even though they never gave it to me in the first place).
    3) Last unit I said I would participate more. I didn’t participate that much. It would be helpful if I did participate so that will be my goal again.

  29. 1.I wanted to improve on my offense and being more accurate in my shooting. I feel that I did a good job of both of these goals. This is because I got the ball passed to me a lot more and scored a lot more points this unit.
2.I feel that I demonstrated good sportsmanship whenever someone got hurt, I always made sure that they were okay.
    3. Something new that I need to work on is not getting upset over the little things because in the end, it doesn’t matter. This is going to help me be successful because I will have more fun, instead of getting distracted/annoyed by the little things.

  30. I really wanted to work on my catching long ditsance balls and getting baskets. I think that these skills did improve or at least one of them did. I only got one basket the entire season. However, I got way better at catching long distance. I can now catch almost all the balls thrown at me and can usually try to throw for the basket.

(This may sound like I think highly of myself) I always show good sportsmanship. I have a nickname in sports named “chippy” and it was chosen because I never give up and always stay positive. I believe that one time I showed good sportsmanship is when one of my teammates was hurt and I went over and helped them up and got them to keep playing.

My thing was working on my participation but I think it has changed to not being a ball hog. I think that I am a little bit of a ball hog when I am kind of close to the basket and have the ball. Usually in that case all I do is try to shoot the basket instead of passing it to someone else. I need to be more open to passing so that other people can have chances to make a goal/basket/score.

  31. 1. One basketball skill I wanted to work on was dribbling the ball during the drills. I feel like I got better at dribbling. Another basketball skill I need to work on is being able to make a basket and I can now make a basket better.
    2. I demonstrate good sportsmanship when I lose a basketball scrimmage and congratulate the other team.
    3. I wanted to work on not talking when the instructions are being explained. I don’t need to work on this goal anymore.

  32. 1) Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
I wanted to be able to shoot and dribble better. I think that I got a little better because I shot a couple free throws and lay-ups in our warm ups.
    2) Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
I think that I demonstrated good sportsmanship because I never yelled. Even if I was frustrated, I just kept it in my head and didn’t say it out loud. Something that frustrated me was when people never passed me the ball, even when I was open and right in front of the basket.
3)At the end of the football unit you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE? How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?
I think I still need to work on my skill because I still don’t get passed the ball. I think maybe if I told people I was open, I might get the ball more.

  33. 1. Two skills I wanted to work on are defense and passing. I wanted to work on defense because at my old school I wasn’t very good at defense. I wanted to work on passing because the turnovers I have were usually from passing. I think I got better at defense because in the last game I held someone to two points. I think I got better at passing because I had some assists in each game.
    2. One example of good sportsmanship I did in basketball is I gave people high fives after they scored.
    3. I think that I have gotten better at not getting upset with myself when I make a mistake(goal from the football unit). I still sometimes get upset, but I’ve gotten better at this. I don’t usually show it when I get upset,

  34. 1.Describe one to two basketball skills you wanted to work on or improve on going into the unit. Do you think you improved, stayed the same or got worse and why do you think that is?
when basketball unit started I wanted to work on my shots and my lay ups. I think I didn’t really improve.

2.Give an example of one time where you believe you demonstrated good sportsmanship during the basketball unit.
I never got upset when the other team scored or blamed anyone in my team.

3.At the end of the football unit you picked something you can continue to do or work on in order to be successful in PE. Now that another unit has ended, do you believe that you still need to work on that one thing or is there something new you need to work on in order to be successful in PE?
I need to pay more attention when Adon Brugman talks in the beginning of the class.

How is what you picked going to help you be successful in PE?
I’ll listen more carefully and be quiet.
