End of NA Unit Reflection

How do you think you have grown as a learner since the beginning of this unit?

I think I have grown by Having more background knowledge about Native Americans.

What topic this unit has been most interesting to you? Explain.

I think the CNN because it was interesting, fun, and really cool to learn that way.

Think about our school values.

  • What has this unit made you wonder? I didn’t understand it at the beginning but now I do.
  • How has this unit made you feel empathy? I felt empathy for the native Americans.
  • How has this unit strengthened your feeling of Tikkun Olam? Now I want to go and help with at the reservations.

What can we (your teachers) change to make this unit better in the future?

I liked it the way it is so I think you should leave it how it is.

My Prior Knowledge of What an Invasive Species Is

What do you think invasive species means?

I think it means when a species invades another animals area of land and sort of takes over and maybe sometimes even if they are a predator of that animal then they might eat all of that other species.

What does it mean to invade something?

To sort of come over and take over something or somewhere and own it like it is actually theirs in the first place.

Can animals invade?

I think they can because an animal can come over and take over another animals land.

What about plants?

I think plants can because they can spread around everywhere and grow over another plant.

How might invasive species affect other organisms in their environment?

They could die because the other animal or plant could grow or live over it and it would/could die with less food especially if they have the same prey.

Native American Experience

Some Native Americans do not like the term Native American. Explain why they reject this name. They reject this name because the name American is in the overall name of it.

One person in the BBC Video said that living in poverty does not mean they are poor. What do you think he meant by that? I think he meant they are just at a financial difference then other people.

Some Native Americans approve of the team name Redskins. What is their reason for approving this name while others do not? Some people have different opinions about it.

In the CNN segment, there was a story told about a woman who used to approve of the name Redskins, and now does not. What changed? Why does she no longer approve of the name? Well, opinions can change after a while and she changed her mind and thinks it’s racist. She doesn’t approve of the name of because she thinks it’s mean and rude.

How can non-Native people help others learn about Native Americans current issues? What can we do to help? We can maybe help by donating to the reserves that they live on and maybe be a little more kind.

Cup Holder Challange

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials ( 6 straws, 1 piece of paper, a piece of tinfoil, 12 inches of masking tape, 2 paperclips, 2 pieces of string, 1 envelope, and 2 pipe cleaners)  create a structure that holds two cups as high as possible and as far apart as possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for participation today while working in my group is not to take the lead and stay calm if something bad happens.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out plan>

My plan is to rip the paper in half and take the pipecleaners and tape them to the bottom of the paper on both sides and make that a structure put 1 of the 2 cups on that then go the same thing with the other half of the paper but with straws then take the envolelope and cut that in half and tape it to the tog of the structure take string take like 4 pieces and tape them across the evolope and put the last cup on top of that and it’s tall and the cups are far apart and hopefully will stay.

Why I think my plan will be successful:  think it will work because it will give enough support to hold the cup up off the ground.

My Groups Plan

We chose this plan because it used the least amount of materials so we could use the extras for extra support to add on to our idea.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction are probably not enough tape of run out of time or run out of a spesific material that we need.

Each group member will be responsible for tapeing, cutting, and building.

After the Build

Our design worked well because it held up 1 cup and was very far apart witch were the things we had to acomplish in this chalenge.

This activity was challenging because we had to use our tape supply good so we had enough for the whole challenge.

This activity was comfortable because it was pretty quick to decide on a plan.

I met my participation goal by not taking the lead and sometimes steping back to share the responibilty with my groupmates and it was surprisingly comfortable in my opion.

A strength of my team was we worked pretty well together during the challenge.

An area of growth for my team is comunication for sure and more of shareing the lead.

For our next challenge, my new participation goal for myself is the same goal because it might depend on the people I work with on these challenges.

Native American Mascots

Explain why or why not Mascots meant to resemble Native American people be changed.

I think it should be changed because it’s probably offensive but if it’s not then it’s fine to leave them as they are.

Should Native American people be given something in return for these mascots? Why?

I don’t know if they should be given anything back for these mascots.

Do you think it would be important to you to change these mascots if a mascot was made of you? Explain.

No I don’t think that it would be so important to change it unless they would make a sterotype that all girls are jocks or that all girls are pink loving dress wearing people.

Should these teams and the government give Native Americans reparations? Why?

Well they aren’t bad things persay but they might be to the native americans that watch or play sports So I don’t really know.

Paper Chain Challenge

My goal for teamwork today is not to be a dictator in the group.

My Individual Plan <insert photo of sketch and/or type out plan>

My plan is for to make 1 paper chain and then take a strip of straight paper and tape them together and then it will be longer.

Why I think my plan will be successful: I think it will be successful because It will hopefully stay together and then be longer than other groups. It would be chain then strip of paper then chain then strip of paper and tape it all together then it will hopefully be longer then other people’s chain’s.

My Groups Plan <insert photo or sketch and/or type out plan>

It would be chain then strip of paper then chain then strip of paper and tape it all together then it will hopefully be longer then other people’s chain’s.

We chose this plan because it will be longer and more affishint then other groups plan’s.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction will probably not any tape left or no more paper left.

Each group member will be responsible for making the loops, riping tape, and cutting paper.

After the Build

<insert photo of completed chain>

Our design worked well because it was longer then some groups.

This activity was challenging because it was very stressful.

This activity was comfortable because we worked well as a group.

I met my teamwork goal by shareing the lead with my two other group members.

Revisiting My Puzzle Piece

In August, I thought the following about myself as a learner: I thought that I was a visual learner that needs scilence and music to work properly.

Today, I would add the following to my puzzle piece that I need a little backround noise to work and function because otherwise it would be way to quiet for me.

Today, I would tweak or modify my puzzle piece by makeing it a little more colorful and I would add what I said above because I think it would tell you something more about me if I did add it.

I think I’ve already grown this year as a learner by not needing music and complet silence to work anymore.

Thinking about working in teams in ETC, my classmates can best support my learning needs by not screaming, getting raged all the time, being a little quieter, and kinder

Pinball/Marble Run Challenge

Essential Question: Can my group successfully plan, design and build a paper plate pinball/marble run using only the provided materials?

Goal: Move the marble from one end of the plate to the other, having the marble travel through at least three obstacles.

My teamwork/communication goal for this challenge:  To her everyone’s ideas, have fun, and for eveyone to feel engaged.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Look at the supplies table. You may NOT take anything from the table yet.

You may only take ONE plate and ONE marble. There are no other requirements. You will have 15 minutes to build.

What ideas do you have? we can build a wall out of popsicle sticks make the mushrooms with the toiletpaper tubes and we will cut holes in the paper plate for minus points.

Your group has shared all of your ideas. Before you can start building, what is your actual plan? we will have group roles to keep everything in order.

How will you make sure all members of the group are included in the building process? we will use group roles.

Reflect

What was comfortable about the challenge/teamwork? The idea section because we all had some really good ideas for the project.

What was difficult about the challenge/teamwork? The time limit and the building processes was the hardest because we had some creative differences at times but we pulled through.

How did the teamwork rubric help your group today? it helped because we stayed some what orginized so we also were very kind to each other.

Is there anything you would change about the teamwork rubric after going through this challenge? No there is not anything I would change.

How did you support your team today? They were very kind it was very easy to work with them.

What might you do differently during our next team challenge? I don’t know what I would do differently next time.

What makes a Team Work

Why is it important to develop the capacity to work as a member of a team? It is important to be at a team work compasity because you’re might need an extra pair of hands to finish the project we were assinged.

What areas of teamwork do you find easiest and why? I find orgizanizing easiest because  it is very simple to lay everything out.

What areas of teamwork do you find most challenging and why? I find diciding on something to do the hardest in a group because everyone has different opinions.

What difference does it make if you are able to play a role in the development of assessment tools? It might help get the projest done quicker.

In what way(s) do you connect this work to our Core Values: Wonder, Empathy & Tikkun Olam I connect this work to our core values through the topics, team work and from going from ME TO WE.
