The huge impact of social-emotional support

I am sharing two articles that I hope you take the time to read. You can access the first article by clicking HERE. This report from Harvard’s graduate school of education shares current research and actionable steps for schools to implement so that social-emotional learning is embedded in a student’s typical school day. At MJDS we already implement many of these suggestions and are regularly working to do so in a more meaningful and authentic way. The bottom line is simple: kids won’t be able to effectively engage in learning unless schools are intentionally creating an environment that supports healthy human interaction. Nothing else is more important.

The second article I want to share is available below and connects directly to the Harvard article referenced above. At MJDS we are able to set healthy limits on screen time and social media access. Outside of school and especially at home, these limits can be much harder to establish and keep consistent. What I hope you take away from this article is, however challenging and uncomfortable it may be to push back against peer pressure (adult and adolescent) and your child’s insistence on accessing social media, don’t give in. Help your child understand the why as best you can and as it mentions in the article, avoid lecturing and instead help your child problem solve by reflecting on unhealthy behaviors and how to change damaging habits.

Social Media is Increasing Anxiety, Depression, Especially in Teen Girls. We Need to Talk About it.

Thank you so much for sharing these important thoughts and ideas.
Wouldn’t it be nice if this was all easier?
    🙂
