How we learn at MJDS

What you see on the walls, doors and windows of a school can tell you a lot about the culture of teaching and learning that is occurring in that environment. If you walk upstairs at MJDS you will see these bulletin board displays that have been up for a few weeks.

On the right are multiple puzzle pieces fit together to create a portrait of our students as learners (zoom in or stop by school to see the detail). Students in our 5th and 6th grade ETC (click HERE  to learn more about ETC) class described what they know about themselves – do they need quiet, white noise, are they visual or auditory learners; The goal was to show how each learner is unique and together they need to support one another’s needs in order to function effectively. This supports the development of a set of soft skills that many adults struggle with. Businesses and organizations today and in the future are expecting adults to engage in this sort of design thinking and collaboration. At MJDS it is a core aspect of how we learn.

Above left is a bulletin board designed by our 7th grade math students. Check out the link below to read more at Gev. Milbeck’s blog.
