Newspaper Shoe Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only newspaper, 24 inches of tape, and one scissors, you and your partner need to create one shoe that fits either you or your partner’s foot. The shoe must be able to come on and off without falling apart.

Teamwork Rubric Focus (Communication):

My goal for communication today within my team is to listen to his/her ideas and not to get frustrated.

My Individual Plan: I want to do like a casting of a shoe over the foot then tape it.

Why I think my plan will be successful:

Our Group’s Plan:

We’re going to make it like a slip on.

We chose this plan because it seemed like it was not going to break.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction are that it may collapse or the tape may com off.

Each partner will be responsible for building and testing

After the Build

N/A

Our design worked well because it had a lot of tape holding it together and the newspaper was easy to mold onto my foot.

This activity was challenging because the tape wouldn’t stay on and the newspaper kept falling off.

the activity was comfortable because we had a lot of newspaper.

I met my teamwork communication goal by agreeing with my partner a lot.

A strength of my partnership was we agreed on a lot of things.

An area of growth for my partnership is that we could have had put more effort.

For our next challenge, my new teamwork communication goal for myself is to do some of my teammates ideas too.

Textual Tuesday

In a place where there is no man try to be a man.

I think this means that if people are being rude to each other and not treating each other nicely, be the person to step up and break the fights up.

My goal to integrate this into my life is for whenever there is a fight or an argument that seems like its going too far, I’m going to try to break it up.

End of NA Unit Reflection

How do you think you have grown as a learner since the beginning of this unit?

I think I have grown as a learner by asking more questions and getting more involved.

What topic this unit has been most interesting to you? Explain.

How most Native Americans live in reservations because I find it interesting that the almost endless cycle of poverty is in so many peoples lives.

Think about our school values.

  • What has this unit made you wonder?

It makes me wonder how many people are in poverty.

  • How has this unit made you feel empathy?

I feel bad for the people that are living in the bad reservations.

  • How has this unit strengthened your feeling of Tikkun Olam?

I want to help repair the world even more now because I have seen more examples of poverty.

What can we (your teachers) change to make this unit better in the future?

We can do a fundraiser and raise money for people in poverty.

My Prior Knowledge of What an Invasive Species Is

What do you think invasive species means?

I think it means a species that invades different places.

What does it mean to invade something?

To break into or go in without permission.

Can animals invade?

Yes, they can go into let’s say a forest and they come in and they eat a lot of the food.

What about plants?

Yes, plants like weeds can spread into a forest or other places.

How might invasive species affect other organisms in their environment?

They might take the food so they don’t have much to eat.

Reflecting on ETC

How have you changed as a group member this year in ETC?

I feel like I have stopped interrupting people in my groups and listening to others more. last year I didn’t do that much.

How has working in ETC made you a better student in other classes? (Social Studies, ELA, Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Math, Science)

I’ve gotten better at blog posting in other classes from the extensive blog posting in ETC, and I feel like I’ve gotten better at working in groups and being less competitive from working in groups all the time in ETC.

Thinking about my blog posts, I have improved by….

Having better punctuation and grammar and getting more in-depth with my posts.

In the future, I plan to improve my blog posts by….

Getting more in-depth and adding more why than what.

Native American Experience

Some Native Americans do not like the term Native American. Explain why they reject this name.

Maybe because they don’t like being associated with a name.

One person in the BBC Video said that living in poverty does not mean they are poor. What do you think he meant by that?

He meant that the reservation is not very wealthy.

Some Native Americans approve of the team name Redskins. What is their reason for approving this name while others do not?

They might like to have a football team with a name that is associated with them.

In the CNN segment, there was a story told about a woman who used to approve of the name Redskins, and now does not. What changed? Why does she no longer approve of the name?

She moved out of the reservation.

How can non-Native people help others learn about Native Americans current issues? What can we do to help?

We can protest and post on social media.

Cup Holder Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials ( 6 straws, 1 piece of paper, a piece of tinfoil, 12 inches of masking tape, 2 paperclips, 2 pieces of string, 1 envelope, and 2 pipe cleaners)  create a structure that holds two cups as high as possible and as far apart as possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for participation today while working in my group is not getting angry at my group mates.

My Individual Plan

Why I think my plan will be successful:

My Groups Plan

We chose this plan because it looked like it would work best.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction is that it might break.

Each group member will be responsible for documenting and building.

After the Build

Our design worked well because it didn’t fall.

This activity was challenging because the materials that they gave us weren’t very good.

This activity was comfortable because there was enough tape for all of the structure.

I met my participation goal by not getting mad at my groupmates.

A strength of my team was designing the thing.

An area of growth for my team is working harder.

For our next challenge, my new participation goal for myself is to work harder than before.

Paper Chain Challenge

Today’s Challenge: Using only provided materials (two pieces of construction paper, 1 pair of scissors, 1 ruler and one 12-inch strip of masking tape) create the longest paper chain possible.

Teamwork Rubric Focus:

My goal for teamwork today is to listen to what other people say and not interrupt them.

My Individual Plan

Why I think my plan will be successful:

My Groups Plan

We chose this plan because it made the most sense.

Possible challenges that may come up during construction we may run out of tape.

I will tape and connect, MM is cutting, YG will watch over and make sure that we don’t mess up, and SM will help me tape.

After the Build

Our design worked well because it didn’t break.

This activity was challenging because the rings kept on falling apart.

This activity was comfortable because my group worked well together.

I met my teamwork goal by not interrupting other people.

A strength of my team was tearing very small pieces of tape.

An area of growth for my team is we listen to each other more.

For our next challenge, my new teamwork goal for myself is to work harder and better.

Native American Mascots

Explain why or why not Mascots meant to resemble Native American people should be changed.

I think if the tribes are okay with is keep them, if they aren’t, change them.

Should Native American people be given something in return for these mascots? Why?

No, I think that if they don’t want them they shouldn’t even have them.

Do you think it would be important to you to change these mascots if a mascot was made of you? Explain.

I don’t know if I would be fine with them making a mascot of me.

Should these teams and the government give Native Americans reparations? Why?

No, like I said if the native Americans don’t want these mascots they shouldn’t have them.

Me as a Learner

In August, I thought the following about myself as a learner: needs music for independent work.

Today, I would add the following to my puzzle piece I need music only sometimes because I only work well with music when I’m doing math work. with other work, it may distract me.

Today, I would tweak or modify my puzzle piece by getting rid of the everybody quiet. because I find that I work better with the constant hum of people talking quietly.

I think I’ve already grown this year as a learner by getting better at tuning out the extra sound that doesn’t matter.

Thinking about working in teams in ETC, my classmates can best support my learning needs by listening to what I have to say and listen to what my other teammates have to say.
